Duran got lazy in his preparation for the fight and was getting schooled badly by a hungry opponent. He simply said "frick it I quit". He was getting paid a huge sum of money and wasn't gonna allow himself to get embarrassed in the ring any longer so he gave up. He can say what he wants but everyone knows this is what happened.
I agree with this. What Duran says on the subject doesn't matter IMO and I don't understand why the boxing analysts and even Ray can't accept the truth in front of their faces. Ray was still butt hurt over the "no mas" controversy because he felt it took away from his legacy but ultimately it wasn't about Ray, it was about Duran's legacy being tarnished.

then Leonard also sorta cheeky and not truly apologetic for not giving an quickly aging Duran his deserved Trilogy for another 8 or 9 yrs, until when it was a much safer fight for SRL.
Leonard ducked Duran after their second fight. This was pretty shitty of him when Duran was good enough to Leonard's legacy to rapidly give him a rematch when it meant so much more to Ray. Furthermore if Leonard wants to claim outrage over not getting enough credit for a dominating win he owed it to himself and Duran to lace em up again and whoop Duran's arse again.
Ultimately, Leonard did what he was supposed to do to protect his own interests. He sought desirable rematches but when the shoe was on the other foot (tenfold because Duran's legacy was thrown in the shitter) Leonard saw nothing in it for his own interests and ducked Duran until both were shells of the former fighters they once were.
Leonard was the king of this. He also stole a decision from Hagler and never gave him a rematch. He got a rematch from Duran wouldn't return the favor rapidly enough to change the dialogue about Duran being a quitter and this still haunts Duran to this day.

You don't think the circumstances of Duran/Leonard II had anything to do with him "ducking" Duran? What respect was Duran due at that point? SRL took his beating like a man, but Duran couldn't. SRL didn't owe him anything, IMO.

Ray can not both complain that he did not get the proper respect for an unequivocal victory and refuse a rematch. He could pick one option or the other IMO and he made his choice.
As I pointed out above he also stole a highly controversial decision from Hagler and then refused him a rematch. Ray was one of the greatest fighters ever but he ducked fighters

Why should he give a fighter (Duran) an immediate rematch after Duran just quit in the middle of the fight?
And make no mistake, Duran beat SRL in Montreal but I would in now way say Duran kick his arse. That was a super competitive close fight that SRL lost, fighting Duran's style at that.
I wouldn't say he "stole" the Hagler fight either. It was a close fight (btw I thought Hagler won the fight by a round or 2). Still, I could see how a judge scored it for SRL.
I'm no SRL apologist. But, I don't think SRL ducked anyone. Dude fought some of the best ever. SRL was a GREAT fighter. Duran was a GREAT fighter.

It isn't even up for debate. He refused Hagler a rematch when Hagler desperately wanted one. In the documentary he admitted to ducking Duran for years as well.

And he played to Duran's strengths by fighting Duran's style to appease his critics.
And it was still close playing Duran's game.
When Sugar Ray fought his own fight, he dominated.
