We thought it coming into the season and it wasn't a let down at all. We saw a rookie hitting class like we have seen in years, if not ever. Plus we saw several other former top prospects have breakout years such as Harper, Machado and Arenado.

I graphed the % of total WAR(offensive players) in MLB by players 25 and younger for the last 30 years. Here is what I got.

Roughly 1/3 of WAR came from players 25 and younger, the most in the last 30 years by a wide margin.

The REALLY interesting info is the dip staring with the baseball strike in 1994-1995. This appears to run for a decade before returning to normal levels. This also happens to be the steroid era...I think the strike may have kicked off the lack of young talent being brought into the majors but the steroid era appears to have sustained that trend by allowing older players to play much longer and delay young talent coming into the league.

Is this your research and analysis or did you take someone else's idea and add to it? Pretty interesting (and impressive). Steroids really hit MLB as early as '89-'90... so your analysis really makes sense. It's easy to see how the extra 5 years or so by the "average" player hanging on and taking a spot from an above-average minor leaguer impacted the game.

I'm extremely biased since I'm an Astros fan, but the MLB seems as exciting as it's ever been right now.

Nope, I pulled all the data myself from fangraphs. I wasn't expecting to see the dip through the steroid era at all, I just wanted to see how this young group of hitters stood out, and when i graphed it, I thought "Holy shite".

Great stuff man. I wonder if the Over 35 group would have the exact opposite chart.

Yea, now that i saw this I wanted to do all kinds of research, but pulling this data from fangraphs is tedious as shite. If i could run a script to look for certain info it would go a lot faster.

I don't have anything to add to this, but I love the FanGraphs podcast.

Did you do all of that research? If so, you've got to get laid more.

JK, nice work. The MLB future looks great.

I love Carson Cistulli. I could listen to him and Dayn Perry discuss nothing for hours, which is what they do.

I agree, I'll pass this on to Mrs. Barry, thanks for the support.
