Did they do the 5 star system for those guys? Never been a follower of recruiting.

I think how much emphasis people put on "stars" in HS is funny. Some obviously work out well while others frick up... sorry for not entertaining you bro

Rivals and Scout didn't come along until 2001-2002.

Looks about right. Much greater success rate for 5 stars in terms of likelihood of becoming NFL starter, next highest sucess rate 4 stars, then 3, then 2.

Brees wouldn't have been a 5* coming out of HS... probably 3*. I'm thinking Manning would definitely have been a 5* though.

Really a good indicator of how hard it is to evaluate QBs. I think it'd be interesting to see the reasons why those lower star players were ranked low in HS (lack of scouting, later development, etc.).

Maybe, but I'm not sure the data is that compelling about the ineffectiveness of HS scouting. This may even be more of an endorsement for Rivals scouting than people realize.

Half of the staters listed were 4 and 5 star QBs in HS. In any given year or over any given time period the 4 and 5 star QBs represent a small portion of the HS QBs evaluated. There are many more 2 and 3 stars. I don't know the exact numbers but I would be surprised if over this course of time 5 and 4 stars represented more than 20% of the QBs rated but they represent 50% of the QBs that now start in the NFL.

In other words a MUCH higher percentage of 5 stars QBs are becoming NFL starters than any other category. Followed by 4 stars and so on. Just like you would expect.

This actually shows the star system works out pretty well. Of course there are going to be more 3 star starters there's way more three star players than five star players. Good luck trying to win championships with a team full of three star players.

eta: I like how elposter said it better

I know in high school baseball they put a premium on how tough the competition you play against is

I would imagine it's the same for high school football

Obviously being the OT baller that I am they rated me 5 star regardless of competition

not sure what is so amusing; this data proves the star system to be pretty damn accurate, generally speaking.

Well I will say it's an awful small sample, in other words it doesn't list all the 4 and 5 stars who never accomplished shite
