Not sure why this question popped into my head watching the Saints game tonight, but:
I wonder if anywhere in the long history of football has the rule ever been that the 2nd half would start where the 1st half ends in terms of possession, down and distance?
I kind of doubt it because in soccer which is kind of the forerunner of football (or at last a cousin descended from a common ancestor) they can't really do that because its a free flowing game. So the "re-set" at the end of the half would seem to go way back. But who knows?
Any of you historians have a take on this?

Are you asking if any team received the opening kick and scored with no time remaining in the second quarter? Cause that happens.
Edit: misread your question

So basically no kick off? Just the game continues?

He's asking if there was ever a time that football did not have a 2nd half kickoff.

Maybe in the early days before the rules were set in stone.

No.
If you wanna know something weird though - the NFL has the possibility of a third half kickoff in the playoffs. If a game is in ot and two of periods elapse with no score, there is a kickoff to start the 3rd ot period. This has never actually happened BC no game has a ever gotten to 3 ot periods
