Just wanted to say I used this method over the weekend when purchasing my vehicle. It worked brilliantly. Traded in my '09 Tacoma for a '16 Lariat 4X4. After price was settled and trade I got $21k off sticker. Free spray in bed liner and oil changes. Bohn Ford for the win.

Good to hear, I've had his post bookmarked forever and plan on implementing it sooner rather than later. Any insight into what items his OP discusses specifically worked and which ones didn't?

Silence is golden and letting them know the first price they mention isn't good enough. Negotiate price separate from trade in. Most importantly for me was stick to a price I could afford and not budge from that. At the end of the day, they either will make the deal because they want to (they need you more than you need them) or they won't. Particular place in Mandeville didn't want to make a deal and I left; no emotions. Ended up at Bohn Ford and they made it work.

I don't have his full list in front of me. But last time I did it, I told the salesman the price wasn't good enough and we left but if he could improve on that to call me.

2 hours later he called. Lowered the price to a number I had in mind, told him I'd be back in 30 minutes to buy the vehicle if they could tint the windows. He agreed and an hour later I had the car and was out the door.

Just posted in the other thread, but using all of these tactics isn't even necessary if you just play one dealer against another. Be willing to travel. I generally use a 500 mile radius and find every dealer with the car/options I want. And there are always several. Then just let the dealers beat each other up until they can't go any lower. It's the easiest way to get the best deal. One dealer's actual final "best deal" is not the same as another's.

Did you finance? If so, did the salesman ask about it beforehand? I know Will Cover's method says not to bring it up until you reach a desired price, but I've been asked up front.

So if they ask you up front about a trade, do you say no and spring it on them later, or just tell them you're unsure?

Irrelevant if you are working dealers against each other. All that matters is the money out of your pocket in the end, and they will all work the numbers to help your tax savings with the trade in the end.

Congrats, he got a good discount. I got $19,000 off my Jag.
I don't know all of his specifics, but if he only shopped a couple dealers, he very well may have got $24K at another dealer. Never did I say he didn't get a good deal. If you read the other thread, you'll also see that I got a deal good enough for me to buy a '17 Hyundai Elantra for my older son, and did it with about 6 hours of shopping only dealers within 30 minutes of my house. But I also know I could have found a better deal if I had time to shop a larger radius.
If you're shopping one or two dealers, by all means the " Will Cover" method is the way to go. I learned how to deal with car dealers when I was a kid. My dad used to buy a new Caddy or Lincoln every year and he is a car saleman's worst nightmare. But if you limit yourself to a couple local dealers and I shop a 500 mile radius, I'll beat your deal 99% of the time using no tactic other than playing one dealer against the other.

I'm not knocking the Will Cover method as the way to act at a dealer. But you aren't getting the best deal if you're not pulling 5-6 dealers from various states into the negotiation. Fact.
And I'm not saying everyone's circumstances always allow them to shop a 300-500 mile radius. On my son's deal, he crashed his bike and needed transportation for his new job NOW. I was buying him the car but put it in his name a cosigned to help him establish credit. That meant he couldn't take off of work from his new job and travel 500 miles for the best deal. Totally eliminated my normal method of car shopping. I took a deal that was acceptable to me, but not the best I could have done elsewhere. But my father and I each worked a dealer in different states using the "Will Cover" method and got to that best price, to the point of walking out the door ( and dealers don't let you just leave). But even shopping it against other local dealers got me $1,000 better than those other " best deals." You have to shop multiple dealers.

The WC method works when you're wanting to buy a new car. Used is a little different because features and mileage vary.

I'm strictly talking new cars as well. The WC method might - MIGHT - get you THAT dealer's best price. But you have to play dealers against each other for the best deal. If you walk into a dealer and use the WC method for their best price, leave. Then call the next day and say you got a better deal by $100. Suddenly that WC best deal price will drop by $200.

There is one major flaw in the Will Cover method, that being "Never offer a counter price." I've bought 4 new cars in the past 20 months, with combined values totaling over $200,000. If you visit one dealer and get their best price, it is never their best price. It 's just their best price they'll give you until another dealer beats it.

They gave me $16k on my trade in for my Tacoma. It was a 2009 Pre-Runner with off-road package, and 112,000 miles on it.
