It looks like a good buy right now. Thoughts from the GOATS?

I've thought this for over a year and have bought in several times.

However, auto sales have been falling for the last 4 months showing a grim short term outlook. They announced a firing of 10% of their workforce this week to help lower costs as they believe a shrink in demand for newer cars is ahead. This falls in line with many analysts that believe used car prices will continue to fall(taking a bigger share in the market of buying new cars.)

In the long run its whoever gets to market first with the driverless cars as a proven concept and are able to get their cars bought in bulk. The race has so many major players its a crap shoot picking the winner. Let alone if some other technology like passenger carrying drones becomes the new phase and overtakes cars as the main line of travel.

So in summary, I'm buying even though I don't like my short or long term forecast for the company. The 5% yearly dividend is tasty, and they have invested heavily into the driverless car space along with several other key players. If they get a chunk of this space this company should be good for a long time.

10% of the salaried workforce (about 1400 employees).

F has a good dividend.

Toyota says sales of all vehicles have peaked. Using U.S. population statistics, Toyata says millenials aren't buying cars/using UBER.

It doesn't take a guru to see that Ford has no future.

I took it off my watch list today. Maybe a cigar butt type play at some point or market forces will keep weakening it.

I've owned it for years and continue to hold it. But like every other long term investor (esp. those with the last name "Ford"), I'm disappointed with its performance over the past couple of years.

I really, really thought that Fields was the man. I thought that he had built a strong enough skill set while head of the Americas and then COO. What happened to him? I think it was losing the mullet. Maybe dude was like Samson. Once the hair went, there went his powers.

Ford is actually doing good work in the autonomous driving space. Apart from Tesla, and along with Mercedes, Ford has some of the better autonomous technology in the oven, from what I've read and heard. But the new CEO of Ford, Jim Hackett, was the head of the Smart Mobility project. So I'd look for that to take a big step forward - and he doesn't have much hair left to cut.

But on the flip side, we're at or near the top of the auto sales cycle. And even Bill Ford has spoken about the boom/bust cycle of the automotive sector, and why Ford has to be careful when considering stock buybacks and dividend hikes. So I'm not looking to add to my Ford position in a major way. If I HAD to buy an automotive stock right now, I'd probably look at Fuji Heavy Industries (FUJHY: Subaru), although there's no dividend, or Daimler (Mercedes), because of the advanced technology that they're developing (have developed) in autonomous, hybrid and electric technology (derived from their Formula One program) and the 4.5% dividend.
