we are about to flush a super qualified candidate. We know that she can do the job but she just did horrible in the interview.

This is sad to hear. Did the company make any effort to interview her in a different setting, in a small group, etc? So many excellent employees are terrible at interviews. And we all know those vile charming creatures who ace every interview, but make complete heinous colleagues.

Could be for a sales position. If you are bad at interviewing you are probably not going to be a very good at sales.

Look up the STAR interview method.

Situation
Task
Action
Result

It's a way of framing up your responses that helps you illustrate your talents better.

Resources give sample questions and you can build a book around these and be prepared for most questions.

The best thing to do is to put yourself in situations where there is no option and you have to do it. It's the only thing that will make you more comfortable.

Luckily, one of my jobs was to speak in front of a group of people (training end users). This was the best thing that I could do in regards to getting comfortable speaking in front of people. I didn't really have a choice, I was paid to do it.

I would highly recommend the Interview Series of podcasts by Manager Tools.

Over my career I have spent plenty of time screening candidates and interviewing, but that podcast series was a huge help during my recent job search. It was $100-200 or something like that, but I listened and applied the techniques.

I had three interviews for selective jobs - for two I got an offer within a couple of days and the other I told them it wasn't a good fit after interviewing.

Anyway, it was a big help even though I thought I knew a lot about the interview process. It talked about everything from building your resume to phone calls, attire, and the flow of the interview itself.
