Wal-Mart Stores Inc said on Friday that it was pulling the plug on its smallest store format, Walmart Express, and closing 269 locations globally, including 154 in the United States, in a restructuring that will affect 16,000 workers.

Wal-Mart said it planned to close 102 of its Express format stores, which at 12,000 to 15,000 square feet are less than one-tenth the size of a typical Supercenter. The format had been in pilot since 2011 but did not deliver the desired results.

The other 52 U.S. stores are a mixture of Supercenters, Wal-Mart's largest format; discount stores; a grocery format called Neighborhood Market and Sam's Club, its bulk-selling wholesale chain.

I have to wonder how much of this is the minimum wage hike. Those idiots wanted more pay and can now jump into the unemployment line.

Already seeing more of this at the local Neighborhood Market:

Walmart near me has 20+ cashier stations and never more than 2 of them active.

You can easily see there are 10+ cashiers on duty just none who care to check people out

Correct me if I am wrong, but they did that at their shareholder meeting which sent the stock tumbling in its biggest one day loss in history, no?

Nope. I did years ago but sold it when I concluded the internet was going to negatively impact all retailers' sales growth.

The small store format was meant to compete with the Family Dollar type stores than anything else - put them in smaller towns, etc. I think they found it tough to break into that market - it's already pretty crowded.

I wish the WalMart Supercenter near us would add self-checkouts. They are great when you only have a few items.

WalMart is an interesting place. Despite being such a big chain, they seem to be very location-manager dependent. A good store manager will result in a great shopping experience. Most of their store managers are not good and don't know how to manage payroll and scheduling (hence, why sometimes they have cashiers standing around with nothing to do and other times the lines are insane and only a couple of registers are open). But there are some good ones. The Supercenter by Lakes of Bella Terra in Katy/Richmond area was an amazing place to shop when we lived near there. We would pass up two other WalMarts just go to to that one, as the stores were always clean, were always stocked, and there were always enough employees.

Same for the WalMart Market in Orange Beach. Despite the fact that the area gets packed some weekends, it never felt crowded in there.

Confession, I never shop. My wife does and goes to Kroger. However, we just got a Neighborhood Market literally right outside of my subdivision. It has taken over convenient stores for me. They have gas, cheaper milk and other stuff I need when heading home on work days.

When WMT dropped to 70 I made a purchase. When it dropped to 60 I made another purchase. Averaged in around 66 and will probably make another purchase soon.

Dumb statement is dumb.

If you want to say they have 20 registers with only 2 open, yeah I get that. See it all the time.

I don't believe for one second that they have employees at 10 registers and 8 of them are actively turning people away.

Cost basis on WMT is $59.60. I think it is smart to move away from their larger supercenter format and focus more on the Neighborhood Markets (which are going up like crazy). Amazon has definitely and will continue to take a chunk out of Walmart sales but I expect it to be a very long time before Amazon takes over peoples grocery shopping in smaller towns.

Also people will eventually get over this (what I believe is a) fad of shopping at high end retailers for groceries (Whole Foods, etc.). If our economy starts doing poorly, people will be returning to Walmart.

I wish all these places would replace all normal cashiers with self checkout if they could figure out how to get alcohol through the self checkout which may be impossible by law.

I mean 90% of real cashiers are assholes who would rather be doing anything other than checking you out anyway.

At least in Alabama they typically have one "cashier" working the 4-8 self checkouts. Whenever you scan something that is age sensitive (R-rated movie, alcohol, etc.) they come check your ID. I'd also approve of an "alcohol/tobacco" line like they have for tobacco products now in most grocery stores. Everyone else can use the self checkout.

Biggest waste of shopping center real estate. I've never seen more than 5 registers open anywhere.

Alcohol sales are not permitted by Louisiana law to occur at self-checkout machines. I had this discussion with a Sams employee on NYE and I did confirm it by looking it up later.

Most of the self-checkout machine sets still have an attendant nearby. It seems to me that the attendant could check the ID before the purchase was allowed at a self-checkout machine. Dumb law is dumb.
