I'm paying off my student loans this month and will have about $6,000 available to add this fund to my IRA and start an IRA for my wife with the same fund as well.

I owe $11,950 on my car but that's at 0% interest, so I'm not overly concerned with paying that off early.

Next month I would add a target date fund to the wife's IRA (mine already has it) in order to diversify her IRA along with VGHCX.

Is this a good idea or are there better funds out there to use? Am I wrong in my thinking to add to my IRA and start one for my wife? We both have retirement with work but I want something in addition to that. Are there better things to do with the $6,000?

TIA!

depends on what you want. I bought VGHCX 2-3 years ago and its done pretty well. I also bought the schwab health care ETF, forgot the symbol.

starting an IRA is a great way to start. And target date funds are good for newbs. They have some downsides, but good way to get diversification.

OP - the T.Rowe and Fidelity health care funds have done better than Vanguard.

I'll have to check out the Schwab ETF.

As long as biotech's stay at insane heights, they'll probably continue to do better too. IMO, Vanguard's is much safer than the Fidelity version. Just depends on how much risk you want, and how much you trust the biotech sector as a whole.

I have done very well with the vanguard healthcare fund. It's a good choice if you choose to do so.

As someone who works in Biotech, I can't believe people invest in it and stay sane

Post some comparisons. I'd like to see them. I'd definitely grab another healthcare fund if it warrants it.

I'm looking now at the rankings of the top 10 healthcare mutual funds this year.

T Rowe price is number 1.

Janus 2

Fidelity 3 and 4 and 6

Franklin 5

Vanguard 7.
Prudential 8
Fidelity 9
Putnam 10

Damn fidelity has some biotech funds. Geez.
