I opened up a Roth earlier this year and only had 1K to start with so I opened up a Target Retirement Fund. I now have over 3K in there and I was wondering should I switch to a different fund (maybe a VTSMX)? Or should I use the "set it and forget it" method and let it re-allocate itself until retirement? (Additional Info: I am only 26, and have a 401K through work where I fully match the companies match and take a little more risk)

Get Simple Wealth, Inevitable Wealth and read it cover to cover. There is a ton of valuable information in there, especially for someone with so much time to spend in the market.

I think the big question is whether you intend to keep investing into the target retirement fund, or do you plan to convert everything to VTSMX. If you see yourself still investing in the target retirement fund over the next year or two, I would leave it alone. Otherwise go ahead and exchange all of your shares for VTSMX and by the time you finish maxing out this year and next year's Roth contributions, you will be able to to upgrade to admiral shares.

I was thinking of converting everything into the VTSMX (just weighing the pro's and con's) Would you suggest once I have enough $$$ to go ahead and upgrade to the admiral shares?

I didn't have to request the upgrade to Admiral fund. Vanguard notified me and it was pretty much automatic. I don't know if they still do that or not.

Yes

VTSMX = Investor Shares
VTSAX = Admiral Shares

Absolutely. As Plano said, Vanguard will at the least notify you that you are eligible for admiral shares once you get to $10,000. I first invested into a Target Retirement Fund in mine, similar to you. I have put all of my other Roth IRA contributions towards VTSMX until I upgraded to VTSAX (admiral shares). I have had 3 years of roth contributions behind me so it definitely did not happen over night.

I started buying VOO about a year ago for an easy low-risk investment and it has done pretty well since then.

I own Admiral shares of the Wellington Fund and they were automatically converted, with notice first. I believe Vanguard still does this.
