Edit: Questions have been answered, thanks for everyone's input!

My wife has Masters in Accounting and CPA license. Some of the classes overlap with the MBA program so she only needs 7 classes to obtain an MBA from same school. Any value in going back and getting the MBA? This would be on her companies dime.

If no contingencies connected to it, she might as well. If it is one of those "we will pay for it if you stay 5 years and sacrifice your first born" situation I would probably stay away. I am CPA as well, and I honestly do not see much value in the MBA (in this field). But if it is free education, I would go for it. May help with something down the road if she's ever interested in career change.

A year of service is pretty standard. Unless she is wildly unhappy with current gig, I think it would be worth it.

If the MBA is from a reputable university and is free, go for it

I would go for it. Being that it is free and she does more than accounting, it could potentially open up a lot of doors considering her resume. Big Four is already good enough for most CPAs on a resume and idk what else she has. The one year of service is definitely worth it and being more educated is always a plus. Plus 7 classes isn't bad at all.

She has CPA, CIA, AML, CFE currently, all set on the industry cents I think!

if she has all those certs then to hell with the MBA unless it is from an Ivy League school, Stanford, Duke, Wharton, etc.

and I would go executive MBA route - contacts are more important to her now.

Also, with all those certs, the top tier MBA programs will be opening all doors for her....she should really look at teaching at some point - start at a Texas or Ole Miss and work up from there...

Are they offering her more $ for it? Or any other incentives? I find that at a certain point in your career, your cpa and experience means much more than an MBA or additional certifications for that matter.

However, if she doesn't mind taking the additional classes and will stay at the company for another year, why not! It will not hurt her.

No they aren't offering more money, she is only 29 and her first job out of big 4 advisory so she has plenty of time for that. We just moved to the city where she went to ug and grad school. She was looking at her transcripts and figured out she only needed 7 classes for the MBA. They do have a highly ranked executive program so she would go that route.

She did get accepted to Wharton 2 years ago but we had a surprise baby so that got shelved. We live commuting distance to philly now so maybe she should apply to the executive program there. The cost of that is 180k and that seems like a huge ask for new company to foot the bill.

Well it won't hurt, but it probably won't get her that much better of a job unless it is an elite program.

1. If they will pay for Wharton do it.
2. Be aware to my knowledge no top MBA program lets you exempt classes.

Then by all means go for it.

There isn't much overlap but the skillsets compliment each other very nicely if she wants to be a senior exec at a big company. Especially if she is at a real top 20 program (not just a top 20 "type" program) she could be positioned very nicely for that kind of career if she wants it.

Couple of questions:

Does she work big 4?
Is she on a partner track?

Reason is, an MBA doesn't carry much value in public accounting.....a JD would make way more sense.

IF she's in public accounting then probably wasting time. If she's in industry and has plans to move into upper management level then definitely

Yep. If she isn't doing accounting already, and she wants to go industry, the MBA on company dime is a good move.

The CPA for accountants opens more doors than an MBA usually(especially in early career), but upper management in industry paired with an MBA is the way to go.

I don't think it works like that. Sorry.
