My wife's company charges more for benefits such as health insurance as your pay increases. Y'all might be dealing with something similar.

UPDATE: they had to tax some "reward points" he was recently granted for a job well done. He revived a "free" 55 inch Samsung smart hd TV with the points, but I guess in the end it wasn't that free after all. Still a good deal though.

Well, mystery solved. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Happened to me as well. Got Bose Headphones as a reward, then saw that I was taxed for it on my next check .

no. not solved. i am much more curious about why the husband didnt just handle this than what the cause of the discrepancy was.

My previous company that did little perks like this would usually add a gross-up amount in my next pay check to cover the amount they had to withhold to keep me whole.

He did handle it, Sherlock. That's how the mystery was solved. When I originally posted the question it was on Sunday and I was tired of listening to him bitch about it and worry about it. I thought by coming to the money board, maybe it could open up some possibilities of what this could be so I could give him a piece of mind until he called his HR department.

I've done this before with two different companies and they would just send my a 1099 MISC at the end of the year. No money was taken out of my check but I did have to pay for it come tax season. I've gotten a lot of "free" stuff this way. It usually works out to a little under half price.

My employer does this, however they gross up our paychecks to cover the taxes as well.
