Update pg3 Husband got a raise, but paychecks are now $50 less
Posted by CorkSoaker on 5/3/15 at 11:16 am06
What could be the reason for this?
Calling HR Monday, but wanted to know what are some possible reasons for this so I know what questions to ask.

Have you compared pay stubs? Any change to healthcare or 401k deductions? Any change to number of withholdings?
Could also be an error.

I haven't seen the pay stubs first hand. He said there's a difference in something about social security. OA.... He said it's five letters that starts with OA. he said it has to do with social security. He doesn't feel like looking it up at the moment.

Something else is kicking in or adjusted. If a pay raise takes you into higher tax bracket, your take home is not going to be less. Doesnt work that way

So instead of looking it up to see what it is we can play the guessing game.

More pay=More tax

Yeah but there is no way that by itself ends up making your take home less.

Higher gross income will yield a higher net income
Don't be silly

There are instances where that is not true and its not uncommon.

If he was say 500 below the next tax bracket and now 500 above for a per year salary he got screwed

Don't know if this is your situation but my wife got a pay raise this year and her check is slightly lower due to Obamacare premium increases.
We insure thru her employer and they explained specifically that it was due to compliance with ACA mandates.

You are taxed the rate on the money in each bracket from 1 to infinity. So he would only be taxed the higher bracket on the 500 over.

Um, no. You only pay the higher tax on the amount you make in the higher bracket. Everything else stays the same.

Go through the old paycheck line by line, do the same for the new one. Contrast and compare.

I got a 1% raise on Jan 1 (don't hate, just started job in December), and my paychecks went down too. I double checked stubs and realized my 401k also bumped up a percent automatically which ended up meaning a lower pay check

I don't mind if more is going into 401k, but if it's taxes, then I have a problem.
