I lurk this board and remember seeing topics about buying cars in Texas at a discount. I searched and can't find the threads. Does anyone know a Jeep dealership in Texas that sells at the discount. Also any advice on how to do a transaction like this would be appreciated.

UPDATE: Wombat I jsut pulled the trigger on the Jeep from Marc. He said you have a referral fee coming but I didn't know your real name to give him. So call Marc and tell him you are the Tigerdroppings poster Wombat who refered the LSU guy who picked up the Jeep Monday.

It really depends. The industry is moving in a direction where location is become irrelevant. More dealers are competing with larger markets in order to save Market Share...at the expense of gross. For example...the average price of an Accord LX in Baton Rouge right now is actually 60 dollar cheaper than Houston Texas. Lafayette is running within a 20.00 margin VS Houston.

Also, be cautious on receiving pricing from larger Texas markets over the phone or internet. When you arrive...the price may magically raise 800-1000 for "fees". Their idea is that they figure you drove from far and will just do the deal anyway. In a city like Houston, if they piss you off...you're one in a million...does not matter to them.

You have a couple of things happening here.

1) In the large Texas cities, you have so many dealerships, so lots of competition tends to have an impact on prices. Basic economics.

2) Companies like Texas Direct Auto, which are basically a WalMart of cars, also help to hold the prices down.

Now, from my experience having bought cars in Texas and Louisiana, it seems to me the biggest difference is in used cars - both in selection and in price. I haven't seen that much of a difference in new car prices.

I bought a Jeep Cherokee at Allen Samuels in Houston for much cheaper than any dealership in this area would go. Hope that will help you.

My experience is local La dealers can't compete with Houston dealers. I called and made a deal over the phone for a new PU truck. Flew from NO to Houston and the dealer picked me up at the airport. Truck (Honda ridgeline RTL) was ready with requested accessories when I arrived. Wrote them a check and was driving home within a couple hours with a dealer tag and all the paperwork.

Even after the $120 airfare and tank of gas I saved several thousand dollars over the lowest price any local La dealers offered. What I learned is that local dealers (BR/NO/Laf/etc) won't deal.

Thanks for the info. Any specific tips on how to get the best deals from out of state dealer? They all have Msrp on website which is what I can get here.

I bought my last car from them and the experience was quite different from the usual dealership experience. They move some cars there, thats for sure, it almost felt like an airport. I prob saved 3k and got a car in excellent shape compared to what I saw anywhere else.

Because they don't have to make deals like in Houston. Have fun when you bring you car in to get serviced by them.

I've bought new vehicles in BR after they matched prices for dealers in Dallas or Houston. I travel to both those places for work frequently and tell the BR dealership I'm not out of pocket any costs going to those markets.

Never been able to get a used car price down. Went to Miami and Dallas for that. Saved $4.5k on Miami deal and $7k on Dallas.

Texas Direct Auto is very hit or miss, internet is loaded with people that had horrible experiences.

Thanks for the help. SO far I have been unable to get anyone to give me a deal better than what I can get here. Ill try River Oaks. I think the problem is that the Wranglers are so popular they dont really need to do any deals to sell them.

Saved 6K by going to Houston and had a nice trip. They still made money obviously, but no way I would have gotten that price in BTR.

I asked around and no one could match it and actually one dealership said I wouldnt get near that price.

I drove by there a couple days after I got it and let him know it could be done.

Im in Lafayette, and no Sir...I deal Honda.

My advice is Ville Platte Dodge&Jeep. Ask for Mitch...great guy to deal with.

Or Sterling Jeep.
