Has anyone tried TrueCar to get good pricing on cars?

I just got savings quotes from $1,855 to $3,455 on this 2016 midsize truck I'm looking for?

Should this be in the car thread?

I just bought a vehicle through Carvana. Very easy experience. They could have delivered vehicle for $655, but I was able to catch a flight from NO to Houston for $35.10 and just drove the vehicle home. I would highly recommend you at least give them a look.

Truecar is good in two situations:

1) you want to buy a high demand vehicle like a Honda Pilot or a Camry that in your area they have little reason to have to negotiate on.
2) you aren't confident in the will cover method or don't want to deal with the hastle.

I think you end up leaving 5-10% on the table relative to will cover, especially on any truck not named a Tundra or Tacoma. Whether that is worth it to avoid the haggling and BS sales tactics you will deal with in the dealership is a question only you can answer.

Most of the local dealers here won't shop TrueCar values we found this out recently shopping for a Pathfinder for my wife.

Truecar gives you numbers relative to what others are paying. Lots of people pay way more for vehicles than they have to. It's probably a reasonable measure on something like a Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander, vehicles that fly off the lot quickly, but I wouldn't use it for any truck or car.

USAA utilizes true car through their car buying service. There are some great prices on a lot of new cars, but you could probably do much better on your own on a used car.
