First of all I enjoy driving a truck, mid-size or full size. If I was down grading to a car with higher MPG, I would not be asking this question.

2008 Tacoma 112k miles, KBB show anywhere from $16k dealer trade in to $18k private party. If I have a few minor things fixed, it may fall in excellent category and might bump up both those numbers to $1k more.

It is paid off and I am currently saving the former note I had. I may need to buy my wife a new vehicle, so I prefer to have only one note at a time. Should I go ahead and suck it up and make a trade for a new/certified preowned while the value is still good on my tacoma? Or should I continue to save and drive it another 3 years.

I assume within 6 months, wife will need a new car, 2 years max, it will be paid off. What might be the reduced value of my tacoma at that point?

Tacos hold their value well..... I'd keep it.

What does your wife currently drive? (year, make/model, mileage)

If you enjoy driving it and it's in good shape, why would you consider getting something else? Especially if the prospect of buying the wife something new in the near future is out there?

Only reason I could see to justify getting something new is if the Tacoma wasn't meeting your needs for some reason.

But I'm a drive it until the wheels fall off kind of guy. My last two rides both had well over 200,000 miles on them when I finally got rid of them.

I am in a similar situation. Cars now last a lot longer if you take care of them. The average age of cars on the road is around 10 years. If you take care of your truck it should last much longer considering it is a Toyota and you take care of it. I would just keep a great vehicle and not have a note.

She drives 2006 Nissan Murano w/ 110k miles, prob worth $7-8k trade in at best.

Tacoma does everything I need it to do, only reason I would see upgrading would be for increased MPG. But I don't think that’s justified unless its a truck with 26+ mpg. I just don't see any truck yet to hit that mark with exception of 4 cyl vehicles.

Just curious in 2-3 years , ~160k mileage, hard for me to conceive what someone would pay for a truck with that kinda mileage.

I agree with the method of keeping until wheels fall off, but I also can see value you in the alternative strategy of periodically trading in.

I think the new Dodge Ecodiesel's (3.0L V6) are supposed to get 28mpg highway.

It's not really exact science, but run the KBB value of an '05 Taco with 160k miles on it and same/similar options and see what it's worth. I don't think there was a major redesign between '05 and '08 so the value should be similar.

Sell it and buy something that you really want. You wouldn't be on here if you really were happy with your ride. Get a raptor or duelly!!
