Be sure your resume isn't underselling your abilities and the full scope of your experience at your last job. For all the warnings you hear about not lying on your resume, I have had to work with two close relatives whose resumes made them look much less qualified than they actually were. Some people are just naturally modest, but that doesn't work on a resume.

ETA: Also, two months unemployment isn't that long of a job search, especially since some of that time was eaten up by holidays. Everything takes longer than you think it will.

Without knowing much about your background or where you went to school, I can make a couple of general assumptions.

1) 7 years in and no CPA, CMA, EA, etc? That's a big huge red flag. It's pretty much a disqualifier in many larger cpa firms, and while it's not as much of an issue in industry, it can still cause questions to be asked.

2) The accounting market can vary wildly from area to area. I've heard others the Nashville market can be a bit tough. Houston is very much an open market.

3) At 7 years in, you should be up for assistant controller or accounting manager type positions. But if you have a very limited score of experience, you won't have the resume necessary.

4) Basic level GL accounting is being more and more automated and offshored.

You need to get your CPA. Then, you need to lower your sights. Look for jobs with 2 years of experience - that's likely what you really have considering you had a lack of progression.

Getting your CPA will help, you may also consider moving.

I know quite a few electricians who make more than accountants. Skilled trades are too often overlooked by folks w/college degrees. With your accounting/business experience, you could be a valuable employee post-apprenticeship, esp to a small-to-growing firm that needs both skilled help & office assistance.

Think of it this way: any thing you do to build your skill set makes you more employable. You never know where your skills/talents will lead you. Start focusing on developing yourself, not just looking for jobs. Take a class, do that apprenticeship, etc. Those sort of activities will also broaden your professional network.

A good friend of mine is a diesel mechanic. He makes more than I do.

Not only that, but they will help you get through life.

Time is hard for me to come by these days, but I wish I had the time to take a basic class at the community college on skills such as electrical, plumbing, car repair, etc. I'd save a lot of money if I could do that type of work myself.

It sucks on the other side too. I've been recruiting since December and can't find what I'm looking for. I started my agency in January and am still trying to staff up.

Never knew a single accounting major that couldn't land a job. What were you doing for 7 years?

Got my CPA and tripled my govt salary in <4 years. CPA carries a lot of weight out there, all things being equal it at least tells employers you are competent in acct and shows dedication to your craft.

I'll echo others in saying do whatever it takes to pass that fuggin exam!

This is unequivocally false. America has the the most job openings ever (12-month trailing average) and we're damn near full employment. Any accountant worth their salt would know how to read these numbers. Maybe that's why you're struggling to find work in your field. I'm sorry if this hurts your feelings, but it's not the job market; the market is incredibly robust as a whole. It's why the FED dots are showing 3 rate hikes for the year...

I don't trust gov't reporting.

I've considered learning a trade in the evening but if I don't use the skill on a consistent basis I fear I may lose it. I heard apprenticeship is better way but the one I'm looking at is four years long....yeesh.

Thanks to SE for help with the resume.

A buddy of mine is a partner at E&Y in Atlanta in internal audit and he's chomping at the bit to get some accountants with experience. Assuming you have the experience and had at least a 3.5 undergrad GPA from a reputable school, I'd be more than happy to forward him your resume. He's always bitching about how there aren't any qualified people out there anymore and I'd love to serve him up a guy I found on tigerdroppings (he went to Auburn).

I do think the gov't is grimy as h3ll but I'm not in the Alex Jones crowd.

My gpa was 3.29 (I found out too late how crucial it was for big 4 jobs in some markets). That's why I'm trying to get my CPA, b/c I figure at that point they won't give a fig. I figure as soon as I do this, then I get some experience at a small firm and try for big 4 or "worst" a firm on the level of BDO or Crowe Horwath. I know Big 4 isn't the end all, I mainly like it b/c of the name prestige.

I'm waiting back on this accountant job, and i get it then I'll focus on my cpa and networking. I don't mind the harsh truth as long as I can gain some value from it.

I had to move 1000 miles to find a good job. It's been the best decision I have made.

After you've worked for 5 plus years, who cares what your GPA was in college?
