Tesla's showrooms, of which there are already 37 around the country, are owned and operated by Tesla Motors. Most of the showrooms are in shopping malls with only enough cars kept in inventory for display and for test drives. Also, there's no haggling. Every Tesla car sells at full sticker price. Service on the cars is performed at separate garages, also owned by Tesla.

Bill Wolters, president of the Texas Automobile Dealers Association, thinks that's a horrible idea.

"If Elon Musk wants to have a showroom in a mall, that's fine," Wolters said, "but he can't own it."

Oh, look, a business dinosaur complaining about disruptive innovations within his industry.

I disagree with Bill's pussy arse approach. And his whining will only ensure his eventual demise.

Bill can suck my nuts. If Musk Oil wants to own 500 dealerships to sell his cars, so be it.

I'm interested to see how this plays out in Texas. His group carries a big stick in Austin.

Tell Bill to make his own electric car or STFU.

What I don't get is....What legitimate need is there for a law that prevents a manufacture from directly selling his product?

The only reason I can think of is economic protectionism, and that certainly isn't legitimate.

I actually ordered a tesla 2 weeks ago. The experience is night and day.

1.The car has two trunks since there is no front engine

2.I put down a $6k deposit to order the car the way I wanted....with a credit card, can you do that with ford?

3.I went to the showroom here, test drove a fully loaded model, was told about every option, went inside sat on an Imac with a sales rep(who isn't commission btw) and we spec'd the car to my choosing in a matter of 5 minutes, no bugging me about not choosing what I did and didn't want.

4.Being able to surf the internet in the car is pretty damn cool, hope other automakers get there

5.the thought of reducing my gas bill to .02/mile of electricity is pretty exciting

6.They're building 6 supercharging stations along the east coast right now where you can fill your car for free in 30 minutes, I know not ideal yet but the technology will evolve.

7. I have 8 years of warranty on my battery when it arrives and batteries are about $10k today I was told but surely with evolution they will drop in price.

8.Best of all no oil changes, services are needed and when something goes wrong for $100 a tesla agent comes to my home to repair it. I don't have to go deal with a headache service department and get raped by high dealer costs

It has to do with dealership vs manufacturer. But like I said, who cares. If he wants protection, tell him to go do it better. He's raising a stink very prematurely imo.

I agree. He's being a real Colonel Toddy about this, and it's only going to help Tesla and hurt him and his interests.

There won't be a charging station in the deep south for many years. We hate change.

And his logic seems to be faulty.

He's worried that if Tesla is able to do this and succeed then every other automaker will do the same. But most of those guys have had decades to make that decision and haven't so they've already decided that it wasn't convenient for them to do so.

I can't see anything that Tesla does or doesn't do changing their minds on that issue.
