start off salary

Whats some numbers I should expect to see as a mechanical engineer coming out of school in louisiana?
I'm trying to see how to approach these offers.

well it depends on what kind of work you are doing really. just guessing 50-70k. working on the road you can make much more.

Looks like average starting salary is around $55k. Looking at Baton Rouge's average salary, regardless of experience, is around $54k. I'd definitely be looking at places outside of LA.

If I could go back I'd do mechanical and go work for oil companies.

thats the game plan. I'm guessing Houston is the best chance to get good pay coming out?

Houston has more opportunities.

Depends on GPA and what you're trying to do. O&G high GPA can hit $90k+. Average is probably close to $70k+ in plant/chemical/O&G. Overall average is a just a bit lower. I'd expect you to see in the 70s-80s in about any ME job offer.

55K - 80K is possible depending on co-ops and location.

The lower end of that being more common of course. A good O&G co-op for a few summers can move right in to 75K+ after graduation. Houston of course seems to be the main area for the higher end salaries.

I started in Aerospace right out of school at 60K with no co-ops.

I would say 60k average. A lot of oil service companies are going to be around this, but you get a good raise and car allowance and stuff after you get through you "training" period. I made very meh grades and couldn't get the 90k jobs that people just assume they will get out of school. After 2 1/2 years, I'm now at a comparable salary.

re: start off salary
Depends on GPA.

High GPA (>3.5)
- O&G Operator/Upstream: $75-$90k
Lower GPAs
- O&G Service Companies: $60-$80k
- Outside the O&G industry: $55-70k

Based on what I was seeing when I was in school. Economy hasn't changed much, so probably still valid.

re: start off salary
Just for personal reference right after graduation I had the following offers (this was 4 years ago):

54k/year with 10k signing bonus as ME for defense contractor in south Arkansas.

70k/year as a field engineer for large O&G service company and would be based out of Oklahoma.

66k/year as ME for O&G service company in Houston.

So it varies quite a bit. Definitely apply to as many places as you can and be open to moving.
