A new fellowship at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, one of the top ranked business schools, covers tuition and fees for MBA students. But the program comes with a catch: Students must be willing to take a job in the Midwest.

Students often select the California-based Stanford because they know they'll get a great education and make contacts in Silicon Valley, where many of them presumably want to work after graduation. But the school has plans to funnel students to more "underserved regions," where the economy could benefit from an infusion of talent.

"When we look at our country, and we think about different places where there's still a lot of room for growth and development, the Midwest was a big part of that," Simone Hill, an assistant director for MBA admissions at Stanford, told Bloomberg.

In its inaugural year, the Stanford USA MBA Fellowship will pay three students about $160,000 over two years to attend the university. Within two years of graduating, recipients are required to find work in the Midwest, where they will "contribute to the region's economic development" for at least two years, according to the program website.

To qualify, applicants must demonstrate financial need and have strong ties to the Midwest, which may include current or prior residency or graduation from a high school in the region.

Stanford will pay you to attend its business school — but only if you agree to work in the Midwest for at least two years after getting your MBA

Any mid-westerners here thinking of getting an MBA? Can't beat a free MBA from one of the top business schools in the world.

Sorry thought I was on the O-T. Redacted.

As discussed on there though (and in OP), you have to have ties to the midwest. I think they said Illinois was considered midwest so this could be a good deal for somebody trying to make a move to Chicago.

Very interesting. Smart play here by Stanford. The midwest is so fertile for technological advancement and entrepreneurship. We just don't have the mentality. Things like this is what will help change that.

hmm do they help with job placement in the Midwest? Or is it "find your own job and pay us back if you don't/can't"??

You really think a Stanford MBA graduate will not be able to find a job in the Midwest within two years of graduating? I think the chances of that happening are close to zero.

Does Chicago, St Louis, and Indianapolis count as the Midwest?

The way the excerpt of the article is written, it comes across as wanting to send Stanford MBAs out to the rural/poorer areas.

Does it say how long you have to stay there? I'd live in Iowa for 2-3 years for an MBA from Stanford.

Of course they'd have to drop their admission standards in half

You have to get into Stanford first. They aren't touring the Midwest and offering normal Joes a full ride to GSB.

They want Stanford MBAs going to the Midwest. They don't necessarily want more Midwesterners at Stanford.

The requirement is having strong ties to the Midwest. I would guess that's relatively easy to prove.

The bigger point here is that Stanford is tired of its grads staying on the West coast and going to Silicon Valley.

My boss went to GSB and he wishes he had gone elsewhere (he's one of the rare few that got into HBS and GSB). His wife went to Kellogg and he preferred her experience.
