Spinoff thread: How much did your parents save for your college educ?

There might be a generational difference between this thread and the one about current parents saving for their children today. I'm curious.

not a damn thing. Not b/c she didn't want to, but b/c she couldn't.
It's why I have a second mortgage worth of student loans, which I'm happy to pay back (though it does suck).

$0.00
They paid "half" along the way though.

Zero dollars. They provided me with plenty of cool vacations and all the funding I needed for travel baseball. Fair trade, IMO.

Mine put into the now defunct Alabama PACT program. I'm not sure what their out of pocket was for each of us into it...but overall with the 4 of us my dad received a positive ROI. My youngest brother's payout is still in litigation I believe.

None - and got told don't spend more than catholic high school in New Orleans costs.
I was on my own after Katrina though and they moved in for a while too.

I always wanted to get a bumper sticker made that said "Me and my own damn money go to LSU"

$0.00
and still graduated debt free
They would give me money for gas and food on occasion, but other than that, I was on my own.
I worked 90-100 hour weeks in a lumber yard during the summer to pay for living expenses, scholarships paid for the rest.

Zero.
The thing that mattered most was that the couple of college decisions I made were based entirely upon what I could afford to pay for myself as opposed to what I actually wanted to do. I worked through school and didn't graduate with very much debt, but I'm also not doing what would have been my chosen profession.
I'm not whining necessarily, its worked out fine. However, this is the reason I will be saving almost to my detriment to give my kids options.

Zero
I had TOPS and they paid for rent, vehicle note, insurance. I would work summers and holidays for spending money.

Wow. I'm surprised by the responses on this thread.
My parents saved approximately $40k for each my brother and me which allowed us both to graduate debt free.
We were told we could have whatever was left over when we graduated. I was fairly foolish and spent almost all of it on 5 years at LSU. My brother joined the military which paid for most of his education. I believe he had about $30k left when he graduated.

They had about $30,000 put back for me, but I was fortunate to get a full ride (books, tuition, lodging), so they gave me the $30k to use for a down payment on my first home

My answer is 'zero' as well. But how many of your parents did this. They sat me down when I was about 11 years old and said "Zach, we can't send you to college. We have no money. If you want to go you'll have to get a scholarship."
It was great motivation. What was your parents' message to you regarding college?

$40k
TOPS paid for all tuition and I got the extra $800/yr stipend for high ACT/GPA that paid for all books.
What they saved ended up being just enough to cover an apartment and food. I was pretty fortunate.
