Well, first of all I wouldn't recommend betting on the sport that you play.

Once I used the website skiplagged to book a flight. It was 80 bucks cheaper to book a flight to Vancouver with a layover in Salt Lake City than just a direct flight to Salt Lake City. Once I got to SLC I just left the airport and "missed" the next flight

I've tried using the site since then but they hardly have any schemes like that on the flights I search for

1) On trans-Atlantic flights I - from now on - will make an attempt to use my credit card points. Conversely, I will only spend credit card points booking otherwise expensive international flights, ideally in business or first class. For domestic flights I simply use kayak.
2) For hotels I use Tripadvisor. They compare rates for all the major online booking sites - recently booking.com was far cheaper than the others, so I used them. When booking in a city that I know, like New Orleans, I'll just use priceline and bid 4 stars in the neighborhood I want.

you won't find much price difference between any of them

the best way to save money on travel(as stated above) is credit card rewards

I consider kayak to be better, yes. I just did a comparison of identical flights (SHV to NYC leaving next week) and kayak was $10 less. I really just like the site interface and how easy it is.

I always check flyertalk.com before planning a trip. I've found some really awesome hotel deals there, and if there's any possible way to scheme for a cheap trip, it'll be on that site.

It's a little intimidating to navigate the forums at first, but you get the hang of it.

If you do this outbound on a R/T, they will often cancel your return.
