I am recent grad (Dec. 2013) with a job at a good company but with a below average starting salary. It has been difficult to pay a mortgage, car note, cable/internet (I'd cut the cord if it wasn't for sports), utilities, and manage to save some money and have some money set aside for fun.

I've been thinking about picking up a second job for possibly weekends, but I don't want to work a "non-meaningful" job such as in fast food, pizza delivery, etc.

I've also thought about just getting through this salary period until a raise/promotion. What would you guys suggest I do to make it through this period? Where can I look to find a decent job for evenings or weekends?

Thanks in advance.

I'm mostly curious how you will have a full time job, and a "meaningful" second job will make a difference on the "money set aside for fun" part of the budget.

Same thing for watching sports.

You won't have time to use it. Trust me...I know.

I am getting lots of overtime...Good Friday was the first time I had more than one day off a week since Christmas. My investment accounts and wallet are really happy, my career aspects are looking good for the time I'm putting in, but my social life is nonexistant outside of texts, calls, and the very rare night out at the bar with friends.

Back to you though:

Its a tough one in the short term, with both a mortgage and car note within 6 months of graduation.

You might have to suck it up on the fun side to meet your savings goals.

I guess it is more realistic to not have a "meaningful" second job. But even if I'm not watching sports, I like to catch SportsCenter either at night or in the morning.

Well the mortgage and car note were handed down to me from my dad after finishing school.

I'm okay with losing out on the fun side for now..for the most part I think I am..

Your best bet IMO is to pick up the second garbage job just to get more money in the bank, don't worry about any stigmas associated with "meaningless jobs."

At the end of the day the meaning of any job is to make money. frick what anyone else thinks.

Another part is to consider maybe cutting your expenses.

I don't know where you are at with that, but you can make a world of difference about being strategic on your food expenses.

If you're main career is the important one then who cares about the second job. Can you be a bartender somewhere so you can watch sports, have fun and make some money at the same time?

Is uber an option in your area? I live in Chicago and have been strongly considering picking up a few uber shifts over the weekend and before Cubs games.

This is completely correct.

In the long run one might be better off investing the time in job-related education but there's absolutely nothing wrong with grilling hamburgers at McDonald's either. If it were meaningless nobody would pay for it.

I've been trying to figure this one out also. I recently took a position that has no overtime but better future outlook. I was thinking about posting on my hoa website that I will pressure wash driveways for a certain price. Good luck to you in your search. I would cut our cable to save money. That is what I did 2 yrs ago and am very happy about it.

Could always think about military reserve options. $300+ for two days a week a month, and that good primary job you have can't fire you why you are away for initial training.

Just my two cents...
