If true, would this change anyone's opinion about bitcoin? Would the people who spread FUD by claiming that not knowing the identity of Satoshi is a problem suddenly be filled with confidence if Shinichi Mochizuki is the creator?

FWIW, here's his wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinichi_Mochizuki

The only thing I believe is that this guy has the worst fricking internet page I've ever seen. This guy hasn't changed it since the day the internet was invented. Holy frick.

Not really because:

quote:

Nakamoto sent a note to a developer in April 2011 saying that he had "moved on to other things."

if I believed that I had created a revolutionary technology that will change the financial world, why would I just bail on it when it's in it's infancy?

ETA: It's hard to be confident in people who put up profiles that look like this:

according to Ted Nelson, as he stated in the video he made, that is Mochizuki's MO.

That could be the case.

I dunno Wiki. According to the link he hasn't published anything since 1999. Maybe that's normal for Japanese Math professors but that seems like a long time.

Watch Ted Nelson's video. Ted's a kooky guy, but in the video he explains how Mochizuki doesn't publish anything in the traditional sense. He just posts it online and then lets others deal with it. Similar to how he handled bitcoin.

Seems odd that a University would allow him to post stuff online while paying him to be a researching prof. That is NOT how it usually works.

I'll give it a watch when I can step away.

I'll admit, it would be interesting to know what the guy's reasoning was for doing all of this.

I usually don't track my bowel movements to their infinite end either. I just deposit my poop in the toilet, then flush. I know my poop is going somewhere, but once it has been flushed, I let others deal with it.

Also, he puts up handwritten PDFs of his math "papers"

No, all it would do is allow people to determine if the creator of Bitcoins profited from his creation.

We know Nakamoto mined the first block of Bitcoins, the so-called Genesis Block. Unless he established multiple mining nodes it should be possible to match any subsequent blocks he successfully mined to the same node as the Genesis Block.

Understatement

Despite his lip smacking at the end of each sentence, weird close ups with the camera and uncomfortably awkward two minute dialog with himself as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, I got the gist of his argument. He doesn't have any proof, but even if he is right I don't really see this changing much.

IMO it can only undermine it

If you look back at the thread on Buffett's comments, and you compare that to trusting a Math teacher who has already abandoned his work? It will give most people doubts about where to put their trust and working capital

Did the guy bail because his Genesis block was where the money was, and is little value remaining (ponzi-ish), or perhaps he sees that there is no future in it?

Too many questions surrounding an 'aloof' personality to support billions of dollars in investments.

I think those rainbow balls on his profile signify the unicorn turds vols has been preaching about. I think this signifies the bitcoin founder reads TD and is officially trolling us now

No , it's still worthless and still a fricking scam.
Would you trade in your greenbacks for Monopoly money? Just cause someone says that it is a new type of Monopoly money with magical ink that no one else can copy?
