Starting a new job soon. Got the offer last week but will have to cover me and my wife on insurance. The company will pay a percentage of the bill.

I've never done it this way and always had the employer provide for me. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, what are your thoughts on going the health savings account route?

TIA

Better act quick. Open enrollment closes on the 31st.

If you miss that or if you find that the available plans suck, join a sharing ministry. Those will still be available after February 1 as long as you and your wife aren't tobacco users.

Changing to a job without insurance should allow him to do a mid-year exchange policy.

OP, look at COBRA. It may be a terrible deal (it usually is) but take a look just in case.

I believe you have 60 days to obtain coverage after a family-status-change.

Get on the exchange fairly quick, just in case the exchanges are pulled by the insurance companies.

Or, you could call an insurance broker who handles health insurance. There were few before ACA, and now they are even scarcer.

If in Louisiana, Blue Cross might, just might, sell you a policy off the exchange, but it will take a while to qualify you and pre-existing may apply. And they could cancel you if you decide to have a baby.

Has anyone dealt with an HSA?

It seems much easier to deal with and cheaper. I know that you pay the the bill in full, no matter the amount. Thoughts?

I don't have a choice anymore, but I'd look at the High Deductible offering with an HSA, especially if your both relatively healthy. You can still get preventative checkups and stuff for free and you can use your HSA dollars pre-tax to hit your deductible, if you ever need to.

Since I hardly ever go to the doctor, I just use the HSA as a savings vehicle. Unless I hit my deductible multiple years in a row, the numbers work out better.
