Afternoon,

My wife and I had a child 8 months ago this coming Saturday. We have found that her current vehicle gets great gas mileage for her driving back and forth to work and our trips to visit her family. We have also found that it's not exactly providing the amount of room we feel we need. That's not entirely based upon the amount of luggage and/or baby toys we take with us but includes the amount of people we can fit in said vehicle once we get there or they come here.

For instance, when we travel down to see her family we basically end up having to take at least 2 cars everywhere we go. We can pack 4 adults and a car seat in the car and ride (although it's not comfortable but it's an option). But when we throw my sister-in-law in or my sister-in-law and her husband into the mix that's where it gets tricky. They all come visit us often and it's the same situation here in town. It's a pain to have to take 2 cars when they come into town as they like to go shopping or we just like to go to places they don't have in their hometown. I don't exactly think it's a huge deal but when they aren't familiar with the roads around here then it becomes a pain as you have to wait and make sure they make it through a traffic light, etc.

So with all that being said, we are looking to possibly get an SUV with 3rd row seating. I know it's not always the greatest thing as the 3rd row seating isn't all that in some vehicles. My wife has a 2010 Honda Accord and when she got it they had leased it for 2 years. When the lease was expiring we had gotten married so we had to decide whether to turn it in and get her something else or buy it. We chose to buy the car and I feel as though we made a good choice.

We are currently thinking of a Toyota Highlander (the wife loves them) and we are trying to figure out if we would like to buy or lease. If we lease I know we are looking at fees and whatnot if we decide to turn it in, but I would like to do the same as we did last time and buy the vehicle at the end of the lease. Is this a smart move or not?

I don't have a ton of car shopping experience because in 20 years of driving, I have only had 3 cars. The first car was when I turned 16 and my dad bought a used car. The second car was used and I paid $7K cash and drove it 10 years before buying my 3rd and current vehicle. So as you can see, I typically get a car and keep it as long as possible. I am just looking for some advice on what you would do or wouldn't do.

If you plan to buy it after, why not buy it now? It probably comes out to be a wash either way, but you'll probably get a better loan rate if you buy it upfront.

We have an explorer because we wanted 3 rows. Highlander was an option but we got more features for the money with the explorer.

How many miles does your wife log annually? That will be an important factor of course

Leasing Vehicle

You owe something. You own nothing.

If you truly intend to keep your new vehicle for an extended period of time, you'll need to decide how many annual miles you will put on the vehicle to help determine which option (purchase or leasing) is right for you.

Best way to describe it. Leasing is better for businesses to do...or those who feel the need to drive luxury vehicles every three years.

You sound like a purchase all day long.

The reason I am thinking of leasing first would be payment amount.

Both of our credit scores are within a 760-780 range and we are looking at either a 3.75% or 3.25% rate depending on the score we use.

I priced a used 2013 Highlander through my bank the other day using the two tiers we would fall in and the cheapest payment is 518/mo.

I just paid my truck off not long ago and I'm not exactly interested and basically paying like I never paid the truck off.

We currently pay $265/mo on her car. I know we aren't going to get a payment like we have now but I don't want to double that either. So, I'm thinking of a lease because I know lease payments are usually less than buying up front.

She drives 120 miles round trip to work daily. So she can potentially drive up to 31K a year. This however can all change soon as she has an interview tomorrow at the University of Alabama so her driving would go down dramatically if she were to get the job. It could be that she is offered more money than she makes now or it could be that it's a lateral move financially. That would be okay also since she wouldn't be driving as much plus she would get to spend more time with our son.

I just want to have some options in mind so that I know which is the best way to go for us and be prepared for it when at the dealership. This is nothing set in stone and if we can't get in something at a decent price then aren't against just keeping what we have for now.

The low payment up front means you may be upside down after 3 years and may not be able to get the loan for the full residual amount.

You'd be able to walk away then, but not if you are over on mileage.

I look at leases objectively. I won't automatically dismiss the thought but it's not a good fit for everyone.

Ftr, I've never leased a vehicle.

Also, you should be able to get a better rate than you mentioned with those credit scores. It won't affect the payment a ton, but it helps.

Does she have any equity in her current car?

What is the current situation on the accord, how much do you owe on it, how much is it worth

Lease... if she gets the new job. that is putting too many miles on a lease if she has to make the 150K round trip drive every day and you will pay on the back end.

If she gets the new job, trade in here car for the lease and they will eat what you are upside down on with it and you would have a top of the line vehicle for a $400 monthly note with all maintenance services included for 3 years them you will be able to get a brand new car every 3 years.. I love leases.

If you drive a whole lot, a lease is not for you.

Get a Minivan. Don't laugh. We did this about a year after our oldest was born. We lived out of state and had two smaller cars (a Lancer and a Civic) so we got rid of the Lancer and bought a used Grand Caravan with 7K miles on it.

We had a similar situation, whenever people came to visit us, we all wanted to be able to go in on vehicle, which we could do in the Grand Caravan. The way the car seat fit, it went on the middle seat and an adult could sit next to it, and we could fit an 1-2 adults and a kid in the third row, and my wife up front with me driving.

People make fun of me all the time for the minivan. I care not. Go to Carmax and get something sturdy and good. The kid will wreck the van anyways by throwing bottles and food.

I had a minivan for a rental a while back for a business trip with multiple people.

I was extremely impressed with how well it rode and how comfortable and easy it was getting in and out.

I'd love to be able to sell the wife on one for her next vehicle.

My wife can't stand that I like certain minivans. I'd drive this

I really like ours. Plus, if you are the type to like to work on your own cars, they are very easy to work on, especially the American brands. Everything is right there, tons of room under the hood, etc.

If the truck is paid off, just trade the truck in on the Highlander and you take the Accord. Doesn't sound like a lease if for you.

Yeah not gonna trade the truck in. I use it too much for hauling wood, lawn equipment, etc.

As far as her car goes we owe 9700 on it and the bank estimated the value at around 9500. So we are right around even on worth vs amount owed. Not great leverage to me.

I hear ya. I ditched my truck when our 2nd kid was born, and I don't miss it hardly at all. There are times I wish I still had it, but those times are getting less and less frequent.

Get the lease, buy extra miles up front so when you dont use them they will pay you back for them and that can be your down payment on the next lease in three years. Or if you decide to keep the vehicle when the lease is up you will have a very low mileage well kept car that your wife really likes and you can finance the remaining 12,000 for a $250 note.

But one thing you should never do is drive a damn minivan always keep you man card and never become a soccer Mom

No. Noooo. Leasing didn't make much sense before reading this but it doesn't make ANY sense after. That's nearly your lease's entire 3 year mileage allotment.

It doesn't sound like you're doing enough shopping around. The 2013 Highlander had the same body style as the 2008. Why not look at older ones? There's a reason their resale value is so good. I wouldn't be scared buying one with 70,000 miles or more.

Leasing can make a lot of sense and can be a cheaper alternative if you tend to get into a short term trade/sale cycle (2-4 years).

It's no better than purchasing a vehicle, paying interest on it, and still having something worth half of what you bought it for (resulting in an equal or higher net payment). But it's "better" because you "own" it right?

I always liked this thread on the topic.
