Property Tax question on new purchase

I'm about to close on a house for a value that is quite a bit less than the taxed assessed value. Can I get the tax assessed value lowered to the purchase price? Do I simply just protest the assessed value during the annual protest period, or is there more to it than that?

In Texas, you can bring your closing statement and get that assessment for the year in question. Be sure to understand what year you are being assessed on. For example, I paid my property taxes in January 2017 (invoice was sent out October 2016). That number reflected my 2015 home value (quite a lag).
