If this has been discussed in another thread please direct me to it.

We are opening my wife an IRA soon and was wondering what company everyone preferred. I have my 401k through Fidelity so I'm familiar with the interface. I know that Vanguard is well respected.

Still doing research as to whether a Roth or Traditional will be better for us. She currently works for someone in a private veterinarian practice that we will be buying in the near future.

TIA for any help.

401k is with Fidelity.
ROTH with Vanguard

This is true for both of us.

We'll probably not be able to contribute to a Roth soonish(ROTH phase out) so I'm not hung up on the decision since it will be made for me.

I mention this as I imagine perhaps maybe your SO may make some money owning that practice?

I vote Vanguard. Keep it low fee and simple.

There is some discussion in this thread about Vanguard and Fidelity. Maybe more?

Fidelity(solo 401K), TD Ameritrade (IRAs) and Scott Trade (an old SEP) for me.

All are good.

I've always been a fan of Schwab for their customer service. But the other names mentioned here are probably good too.

Everyone seems to like their online broker (or they wouldn't be there).

I only have experience with 2, Fidelity & TD Ameritrade. The Fidelity site is spectacular, TD is very poor in comparison in my opinion.

TIAA-Cref. Nonprofit...my kinda values. Mostly open to college/univ/hospital employees, but independent IRAs are open to any investor, provided you do a monthly direct contribution. LINK /

If your intention is to just stick your money into a handful of index funds or etf's, then the Vanguard account is probably the way to go.

If you are going to actually trade the account, I'd go with a Merrill Edge account. The trades are only $6.95(for stks), customer service is great, and you get free access to Merrill Lynch research reports (voted best on Wall Street 3 years running by Institutional Investor).
