Put some of your bar money into a Roth. Didn't start mine until 25...would love those years of residual income back...

You've got the rest of your life to make money. Go out and have a good time. But buy some NFLX every time you have a spare $100.

Have a little more fun spending money on experiences, and don't spend as much money on rarely used and relatively expensive consumer goods.

Don't open up a credit card just to go to Hangout Fest.

No it is not free money.

Buy all the Pharmacyclics (PCYC) stock you can, and have your parents buy as much as they can and hold it for the buyout in 2015.

I found that stock in spring 2012 at $27 a share but never invested. It had been on a tear by the time I found it. Abbvie bought them for $270 a share.

That, or buy as much PATK stock as possible from 2009 onwards and become an OT baller.

Start a Roth IRA when you get your first job making decent money. You can probably spend a little less on her engagement ring

10% of your check in savings - no exceptions
10% Roth or similar
No Credit Cards for any reason
Pay Cash always
You can live without 90% of your purchases you will make in the next 10 years
Accept help from no one. You will not learn how to make and spend your money.

That is terrible advice if you have the means to pay off the credit card every month. I save 2% on all my credit card purchases. Over the course of a few years, that adds up to a bunch of money.

Obviously, it isn't good to use credit cards if you can't afford to pay the balance every month though.

LINK

Americans are carrying $752 billion in credit card debt, obviously a significant number are not paying their balance in full. You get the "free" money because the credit card companies are betting that sooner or later you wont pay the balance, statistics indicate that for most card holders they are correct.

In 1992 you will think about buying a bunch of AOL stock but wonder whether it is too risky. Do it anyway.
