Does anyone know if process operators will be in demand in the next few years between Baton Rouge and the river parish areas? I know a few years ago a lot of plants were hiring, but I don't know if demand has fallen since a lot of retirees have been replaced.

not all of them.
there are 5 guys in my unit alone that have 30+ years. they should be leaving with in the next 2-3 years

we just hired a bunch of operators and I think we are hiring again toward the end of the year

I think the demand will continue to be fairly strong. There is a plant restart in Geismar next spring that will be hiring a good number but also I'm still seeing operators approaching retirement age.

Nucor will be building a steel refinery in Convent (St. James Parish) over the next several years and will continue to add on to it through phases. That will create some jobs in the River Parishes.

$42k base salary with $73k in OT

Plus 9 weeks vacation even though they only give you 10 days...

The work force is aging here in Lake Charles as well. Many of my coworkers would have retired by now but due to poor economy are hanging on for 2-3 more years. I think that there will be a demand for operators once the baby boomers finally retire.

Now most are taking those ptech degrees or experience

I think if the cost of natural gas continues to stay down, you will see a continuation of plants expanding or no longer being idle like they have been for a few years now. Which means more job opportunities in the industry.

We are getting 12 new guys in my unit. About 25 total operators by the end of the month for the whole plant. I doubt there will be much hiring for the foreseeable future now.

generally speaking, most plants require some "industrial experience" (working construction in plants as a contractor for example), usually 2-4 years, instead of proper schooling...that is, to be eligible for hire.

Does working in a shipyard count?

I'm planning on doing the PT program at the river parish vo-tech in Reserve. What's the typical starting rate/hr these days? I know I'll have to take a pay cut at first if I ever get on with a plant, but i know in the long it'll be worth it.

Not 100% sure about shipyard experience, would probably depend on which plant.....nuclear plant, probably a no go....papermill, might be ok.

Starting rate varies (union / non union / chem plant / paper mill) but the range starting out is 15.00 - 22 ish (paper mill being 15, chem being 22).....some within 1 or 2 years up to 26ish.

But with built in overtime you could overcome a 5 dollar an hour pay cut.

Thats almost a low ball number now at most plants. You can start around 55k now and if you work hard you can top out in 2-2.5 years making over 100K. and thats with MAYBE 4-5 hundred hours of OT, which isn't that bad. Some people work 1000 hours of OT and make way over 150K. Just depends on how much you wanna work.

30 bucks an hour to start is pretty high...some of the top refineries dont even offer that. Wonder what top pay is?

most large refineries start at or around 27, top out at 33. with shift work, 27/hour nets 55k -60k, depending on the shifts.
