I'm applying to some very competitive LLM programs across the country, so I really want to nail my personal statement. Any tips from the MTers on how to do this?

Don't let them know that you are a white male.

I didn't spend much time on mine last year.

Personal touch on why I wanted to study that field
My accomplishments and qualifications
Some other stuff

It was pretty short if I remember correctly

If they are really competitive, you should seek out professional help. In tight competition, these things matter and I have seen some smart people bomb them.

I need an LLM to practice in the area that I want to. And I have a shot at some top 5-8 programs, so what the hell.

Any recs for the personal statement?

This article seems to nail what I was thinking. Briefly describe your past work history/education, but focus on why you want to be in the program, what you bring to the table, and what you plan on doing with the degree post graduation.

Sound about right?

How long does it take to get an LLM and what would one use it for?

The only people I know who get LLMs do it in Tax or Admiralty. But perhaps there are other fields

Doesn't Michelle Bachman have a Masters in Taxation?

Just looked it up. From William & Mary no less. Impressive. Then she worked for the IRS.

I think I'd have killed myself.

No

ETA: Possibly tax, but even then that is a stretch

Opposite of what I've heard from many people. And that is only if you don't have experience in the field

Serious question, what field are you looking into?

There really aren't that many LLMs running around, so I don't see why there would be much in the way of people recommending a young JD to get one.

I've literally never come across, or had any one I know come across a situation where an LLM would have done anything for them that 5 to 10 or whatever years in their field as a JD would have gotten them regardless.

It isn't like most partners at firms are LLMs like CEOs have MBAs.

Tax. And I don't have a background in tax. But I have heard from a number of people within the tax field that an LLM is the best way to get your foot in the door without having prior tax experience.

I don't have a ton of debt. And some state schools that also have top programs aren't extremely expensive.

Yeah I can see that then. Tax is the only LLM worth a shite.

But the problem is you are stuck doing tax law after

Ok, the way this thread was going I thought you were going to say some random field. I don't have experience with tax, just noticed tax guys carrying LLMs more so than any body else.

I can't really opine on its necessity other than those observations. Just as usual, don't get bent over on tuition.

I will say that you are probably just taking what is available to the JDs. At least that's how it worked at my school. So I suppose you should have tried to take more tax classes for your JD.

But that would make me want to kill myself. Income tax was enough for me.

Easier to carve out a niche

I think I'll have a pretty competitive app for top 10 programs, so I figure what the hell. And it seems like a bunch of LLM programs (including tax) are struggling to fill spots.
