Looking at either a new explorer or pilot. My preference is the pilot, wife likes the explorer. Was going to see what I can reasonably expect to pay for a pilot with the lowest model trim that has leather, which I believe is the EX-L. Also for well qualified credit scores what could I reasonably expect as far as dealer interest rates, going to secure financing today through my bank but was curious about dealer.

That pilot is exactly what I'm looking for....So far, the best price I've found on the EX-L, before taxes, after all other fees is 34,908.

I'm not in the car industry. What you'll pay is based upon demand, availability, your willingness to "delay" your decision and how well you can negotiate.

For auto loans, I recommend either PenFed or Lightstream. PenFed is offering 1.49 % to 1.99 % secured auto loans. Lightstream will match and beat ANY auto loan rate and it will be UNSECURED. Lightstream requires an extremely high credit score and income. I'm not sure of what their cut-off credit score is or income, but for example, I have an 805 FICO credit score with them.

Don't get discouraged if you are not approved for Lightstream. Chances are, you'll still get approved with tier-1 credit at PenFed. That's why I recommend both places for auto loans.

Good luck.

You can get 0% of the Explorer in lieu of a rebate, but you can usually negotiate that rebate back in. You'll get more car for the mooney with the Ford, but you MIGHT be sacrificing some longevity (not familiar enough with the new Explorer to say how long they'll last).

Is the car for your wife? If she prefers the Explorer and will be driving it the most, you get her the car she wants IMO. I wouldn't want my wife picking my vehicle there was one I preferred more than her choice.

What's the benefit of having an unsecured auto loan besides assuming you actually can and will pay it all off on time?

Obviously I'd prefer for it to be unsecured just in case, but is there something beyond the "They can't repo your car" type benefit?

If you get yourself in a real pickle, then you can sell the car without paying the loan back, so you can use the cash to pay back your bookie.

How can you get 0% for the explorer? Just ask the dealer?

After reading this thread I qualified for Lightstream and they offered me 2.59% on 60 months which seems solid to me. Anyone have any idea what a good "out the door" price is on that Pilot EX-L with taxes and fees included?

Call Lightstream and let them know that you are filling out an application for PenFed at 1.49 %. Lightstream will ask you to send in your application for PenFed to them (don't actually submit it to PenFed to avoid a hard inquiry on your credit report) and they'll then beat PenFed's rate by .10 %.

Takes about 20 to 30 minutes total before you received revised documents from Lightstream with your new auto loan rate.

Does Penfed/ Lightstream offer financing on used cars as well? What does a well qualified (800 credit score) interest rate look like there?

Yes. Probably 1.99 % at PenFed.

Where are you at, and are you willing to make a trip to Houston? I just bought 2 vehicles and it was stupid easy to get money taken off. Emailed every dealership in the Houston metro area for the car we wanted. Took the best price to the one closest to us and they matched. For one, we were also looking at a different make and model that was more expensive for same features. They matched across brands to get the sale and it was a huge discount. All visits to dealerships on one Saturday. Started emailing on Wednesday and had it down to 2 actual stops.

They also matched each other's trade in values. Again, they just jump through hoops here from what I've seen.

AU Jim I found one in Honda of Covington in the colors and trim I wanted and they went down to $34,350 before tax. Out the door for $38,150 on the EX-L. We love it.
