New Vehicle Advice Needed
Posted on 1/16/14 at 2:03 pm

I currently have I have 06 Titan that has 173,000 miles. It runs great and haven't had any issues.
My dilemma is that I need new tires and brakes and some other routine work and I can't decide whether to trade it and get a new vehicle or go through the maintenance and keep going until 230,000-240,000 miles.
Not sure what I'd get for a trade and even sure what I'd get as a replacement. Probably looking for a smaller truck or SUV.
WWYD?

Spend the $800-$1000 and keep a good vehicle.

It's more like $1500. Tires are $900-$1000 and I don't change brakes out myself.
Still same opinion?

Would you rather spend $1500 for maintenance or $20K + for a used / new vehicle?

What would the note be on a new vehicle? The cost of the repairs will probably equal 3 - 6 months worth of payments. I'm guessing that it would take you about 3 years to get to the 230k - 240k mile mark.
I think the real question is, when is the best time of the year to purchase a new car? If you can save $2,000 or more on the purchase cost of a new vehicle by waiting until August, September, or December, then your out of pocket cost will be lower by waiting. Also, it will give you a few months to save up money for a larger down payment.

I would do the maintenance.
1.5K + probably a grand or two max of depreciation is a lot less than the depreciation of a new vehicle from 0 miles to 60K miles.
If you squeeze an extra year or two out of each vehicle over the course of your life, you can save a lot of money over the long run.

If your looking for a new truck go look at the 2013 F150. There are still many on the lots and you can get an amazing deal right now. The 2014's started showing up in October and they just anounced a new platform for 2015. I have seen up to 13-15K off MSRP on 2013 models.

You have been lucky so far...don't see you getting past 190,000 without some major money being spent.

Do the routine maintenance and keep her around. Then go read The Millionaire Next Door.

1500? Yes, still same advice. And then read the book mentioned above.

That $1500 would be a drop in the bucket compared to a new truck/car. Let's use $750 car payment for sake of ease. In two months you are done and in month three you are ahead of the game. And that's assuming you don't get a new one that has something wrong with it and have the headache of going back to the dealer over and over. You said yourself your current one runs great. Keep it and show her a little love. Put that $750 somewhere else in month 3 and thereafter.

I get your point, but that's a really big car payment
ETA: And I feel like I better clarify that in no way am I saying it is cheaper to buy a new or newer vehicle compared to fixing up his current paid off vehicle.

Yes, it's a big, but not outrageous if it fits your budget. $35,000 loan at 3% over 4 years is $775. Increase the term to 6 years and rate to 3.5% and that's $540 a month, which would be 3 months instead of 2 to equal the $1,500.

1500 dollars = 3 notes- drive it 3 months and you break even
If you decide to sell soon you should get at least 50-75% of that back in your sell price

That is a very realistic possibility nowadays. I'd never pay that much, but I do know some that do.
That number was just for simple math anyways.

Getting maintenance costs out of a sale? That's not happening.

you put new tires on a vehicle and if you are a half decent negotiator you can recoup half of your money.

Trade I'm truck for what 5,000?
Get used f150 for 25
Have a nicer truck and drive it for 5-7 years

Great advice. Never thought about it in terms of the maintenance equalling 3 car payments.

I just went through this same senario with my 06 TL. It just turned 100k and I was trying to decide if I wanted a new/used vehicle or do I go ahead and put $1.5k needed in routine maintaince, knowing that I'm not getting that money back. In the end I decided to go ahead get the timing belt changed and had to replace something in the rack and pinion steering. That was 4 months ago. Glad I am back to saving up money. The car doesn't depreciate nearly as much now as it did the first 3-4 yrs of ownership. I actually thinking I may keep it till my 13 year old can drive and just give it to him.
