Need some skills

Looking into getting skills in cloud computing, and network security. These would mesh well with an accounting background, right?

Cloud computing is a big thing right now with ERP providers. It isn't so much about accounting itself though, but I think accountants who focus on rigorous internal controls to help get good data will do well.

What about the Big Data craze, any thoughts on that?

Tell me more about your background. Do you have any computer skills now? Have you programmed before? What's the most complicated system you've used or more specifically administered? Why do you want to be in the cloud computing security world?
Critical thinking is more important than your background in my opinion but our accounting department can barely turn on a computer but I know other guys who are very tech savvy from that field.

I did c++ years ago. Cloud computing seems like something to be skilled at given the future trajectory. I like adding new skills and keeping my options open.

So here's what I would do. Take some cs classes online free. Try programming things in multiple languages different ways. Go through setup process and take a site live from the ground up. Read and research.
Build an accounting app. Automate your day job as much as possible. Programming is a skill that will be valuable for years to come. Salesforce has a good developer program as well. Service now is up and coming as a big player as well. SAP moved to Google so learn about the Google cloud.
Study research and read everything you can learn how people do things. You will know you're good when you can look at a program or site and explain the mechanics of how it works or how you would build it.

Good luck the industry is crowded in some ways at least at the bottom. Once you're established though the opportunities are great.

We have several people with accounting backgrounds who enter through business intelligence. Tableau is popular in the enterprise. There is a lot of interest in becoming skilled in Power BI from Microsoft. It's got an inexpensive entry point and it's available in the cloud.
You might want to get a Security + or other baseline security cert. Just something that demonstrates you care and have an understanding of security. Security's focus is more than just networks and firewalls. Physical, procedures and plans for everything.

Power BI is cool. The ask a question stuff will be ready for primetime soon within a year probably. Also easier to program than tableau.
