need some advice on repair or replace my car

have an 08 altima with 130k on it, never had an issue with it until recently.

took it in and the dealer said the transmission is done and will be 4k to fix. i of course am taking it to a good place tomorrow for a second opinion but lets assume i need a new tranny, what should i do?

cars been paid off for 3 years and i get paid mileage for work.

id like to get 250/300k out of it

lets just say i get rid of it, what do you recommend for a good road warrior car that i can put 300k on it and wont cost me a ton. also 30+ MPG please.

might be looking for a slightly used, 2-3 year old

The new Accords have the same CVT automatic transmission as the Altimas, FWIW.

i call bull shite. call around to other trans shops for quotes. simple as that.

if you get another car you will have the same problem again i can assure you that. they are designed to fail after 130-160k

moral of the story get it fixed and never at the "stealership" they will always have the highest price.

Get a second opinion from an independent. Dealership repair prices are generally outrageous.

is it slipping? make sure it has tranny oil first, before you get royally screwed over.

Good call, but you didn't say whether it was at another dealership vs. an independent. Hopefully the latter.

If you like the car and have no other issues I'd say get it fixed.

Assuming $4000 as your lowest price to fix I would rather pay that than spend 3x-4x that on a new (used) vehicle.

I assume the CVT? If so, some shops won't work on them. Definitely get the 2nd opinion from another shop though.

As for a reliable car option, Accord, Civic, Camry, Corolla, even a newer Hyundai would be a great choice. I'd personally shy away from the CVT trans (new Accord i4s, most Nissans) as they seem to fail and cost more to fix.

My 2 cents.

I will be needing a good used car in the future since I will be increasing my commute distance. I have researched this a good bit and basically came up with 03-05 camry or accord. If you shop you can get one for around 10k with about 60k miles.

Also in doing my research I found that if you search the google you can find consumer reports logins that will enable you to look at reliability charts for the specified make/models.

depends how much you mind hanging around repair places...I hear best to keep 10 years but also don want to involuntarily get in the car restoration business...
of course, i am sure that when you paid the car off, you pretended to still have a note and it has been accumulating in a special account for your next car purchase. That way, when special account + trade = next car, you will never have a car note again...not the american way but as sad as it sounds, doing things the opposite to that way is actually better lately.

simple math
if your note was say $400 a month, then you would have 400x12x 3 years = $14,400 in cash for your next one now...

If it has a CVT you might want to do a little more research. When Nissan first came out with these there were some issues and they extended the warranty on them to either 125k or 150k, no sure which. Not sure if all yrs and models but I know they did this on the 09 Murano.

Reliable transmission - many new dealers use this shop-

Did you keep this tranny serviced on schedule? CVT are very reliable

Why would you ever want to have a car that long?
