MT Attorneys -- how do you stay current/ahead in your field?

Are there good CLE type websites for attorneys? And any advice for practicing an area of law where you feel you're starting behind most of your peers due to lack of experience?

Which area of law are we talking? Some, even most, areas of law are tremendously local.

I am friends with a local attorney and his relationships are more important than everything else combined.
He made a call and made my fiancee traffic ticket turn into a warning. I don't care about his legal expertise, if 8 have local legal needs he is who I'm going to

In criminal defense, relationships are indeed tremendously important. Generally speaking, asking a criminal defense attorney to travel is a terrible idea. With that said, this only applies if there is a base level of competency there (or if it's an extremely trivial issue, like a traffic ticket).

To OP: the state bar assn has various interest sections tied to areas of law. Most sponsor regular CLEs and networking functions. There are also professional organizations like the LACDL (criminal defense), the LAFJ (trial attys, civil matters), the DA's assn, etc. All sponsor CLEs....as do the four law schools in Louisiana.
Those with very specialized practices (multi jurisdiction toxic torts, med-mal, and so on) are often engaged with national organizations of such attys.

Not surprising to me.
My major point though is that local attorneys that are well connected get the most generous treatment for their clients

I signed up with the appellate court in my area to get automatic emails when decisions are released. I usually click through them to see if any are interesting or pertain to my practice.
I'm also on a mentor/ mentee list serve through the Plaintiff's bar

I get more of these e-mails than I know what to do with. It feels like could spend four hours a day just reading the cases and articles that come in every single morning - overwhelming.
I think a lot of these (law360, bloomberg) are fee subscription based, but there are a ton of firms just running blogs on some particular area of law. Some of them barely update but some are updating 2-3 times a week. Just google and read around, I'm sure you'll find something.

Just MO - you get to a point (or should) after 4 or 5 years where you have a very good base knowledge of the area(s) you practice. This is gained through practice, CLEs and reading. I go to a CLE for the two subject areas that make up the majority of my practice every year where it is purely an update of new statutory law and new case law. The other area is prone to new wholesale regulations every so often so that will spur me to go to a specific CLE covering those new regs after reading what I can about them.
I also have a couple of lawyers in each area that I can call upon that have been doing it for decades longer than I have. Their willingness to take my call, which happens less and less over the years for knowledge and more for shooting the bull, is invaluable.

i definitely agree with this. my practice is 95% in one specific area of law. i'm at a point after a number of years doing it that i actually feel knowledgeable and capable when presented with the issues that my clients regularly face.

also agree wholeheartedly with this. there aren't a ton of lawyers/firms that are 100% dedicated to the areas that i practice, but i frequently deal with the ones that are. fostering these relationships is invaluable to my practice because 1) these people are an excellent source of information, and 2) in the law (especially in the new orleans area) more times than not, who you know is more important than what you know.
