1. Should it be a collaborate of linked threads geared at specific topics such as... How to invest out of college? How to manage debt and setting aside money for retirement?
People come to this board for a variety of reasons, most of which are very very different in subject matter. Thus, I think that perhaps having one person responsible for each type of subject would be a good idea, and then all those threads could be linked together in one thread providing links to all the other individual topic threads.
The types of topics I'm thinking of are...
-- advice about loans, credit cards, business plans, etc.
-- tax advice
-- advice about interviews, breaking into certain fields, etc. (this might be split into 2 actually, one for general business / marketing / banking / accounting jobs / etc., and one for investment banking / asset management / private equity / etc.)
-- study help for standardized exams; advice on majors and grad schools; general school related questions
-- practical investing; how to value assets; investing tips recently in the news; (a list of favorite investing books & publications might go along with this one)
-- theory-based questions on monetary policy, macroeconomics, foreign exchange rates, likely impact of certain regulatory changes etc.
2. Shall we have a consensus of opinions that are concise and direct answers to common questions?
I think the board is small enough to where a trusted expert could be found to round up the respected opinions of everyone who knows a lot about a particular niche. I don't think there would be too much stepping on toes.
The problem is getting people to volunteer their time to this type of thing. Personally, I don't think that I would be the right person to create any of those threads. I could contribute to the theory-based topic, but BatIJ would probably be much better at making something that was both comprehensive and geared toward questions coming from a practical investing audience.
3. Should we put together a voting system, that enables us to use the search function of the MT and gather a set of 3 to 5 best user posts for each topic, then vote on which post gets to be the answer?
Maybe, but like I wrote above, I think the #1 problem here is going to be finding volunteers who want to put forth the effort. Most people already know who the best 2 or 3 posters are for each of these niche fields, and having any one of them actually create the thread would be the hard part.
At least that's the way I'm foreseeing things in my mind right now. I'm often wrong at reading how other people will react to things.
