Mezzanine PE vs Traditional PE (non real estate)

Has anyone on the board worked in one or the other. I'm hoping to join a mezz fund and understand the fundamental differences, but would like to get some perspective from those that may have worked in the field.

And yes i've read the Street of Walls, Mergers and Inquisitions, etc articles, but if you are currently in the position and could offer an unbiased and objective view, i'd greatly appreciate it.
