So i got a letter in the mail from Carter Federal Credit Union in Bossier City saying I have been pre-approved to refinance my truck at a lower rate, no payments for 90 days, and a $100 visa gift card. So naturally I'm thinking it sounds too good to be true and also not sure how easy of a process that would be with CFCU being up north and me in south louisiana.

Anyone have experience with something like this? Good/bad?

You left out some pretty important details, such as what are the terms of your current note vs. what the new one would be.

I currently have 45 payments left financed at 3.24% the offer is to extend me out to 54 months(which the letter said is negotiable) at 2.89%. Also no payments for 3 months and add in the gift card which obviously doesn't mean much. If my simple math is correct their offer comes out to paying almost a couple grand extra in the long run? ... But cheaper monthly and that no paying for three months is somewhat of an added perk i guess

My concern more lies in dealing with a credit union not in my area and how difficult it would be to facilitate something like this

Your not saving enough in interest (especially if you plan to pay off sooner than 45 months) to put credit and refinance to just add a year more of payments (your just deferring your 90 days of payments), plus you have paid the 'higher' interest terms of your loan already, so you would actually be losing $, not gaining anything. I have 1.99% with CapitalOne for 48 months, so 54 months Im sure you could really get 2.24-2.49, so that rate is nothing amazing

I guess that leads me to ask now, would I be able to refinance with another institution for my same terms at a lower rate, or for some other beneficial scenario ?

FWIW My truck in question is a 2012

I'm in SE Miz and use my company CU in Omaha, NE almost exclusively for over 20 years. I've had loan docs emailed to me within 30 minutes of sending in the app.

edit - I'm 99% sure if you want to keep the same # of months left on your current loan, they will do it no problem. Either than or set up online bill pay to pay extra. The interest savings really isn't enough to make much difference though, unless you owe MSRP on a 'sclade.

Yes, Capital One or other lenders can do refinance/loan at better rate, but like me and other poster have stated, even if you go at the same term but lower rate, your actually not going to gain anything (as when you refinance, the %/interest fees are front loaded so you actually paying lower apr/interest fees now than you were at beginning year of your loan), plus your not going to save but maybe a 1-1.3%, not worth it to pull your credit again and do the paperwork. {granted, seems like your mind is made up}

This is good feedback. If it isn't very beneficial for me to do so then refinancing at this point may not be worth it.
