I think I already have the answer to this question, but would you:

1. Get LSU MBA with employer paying about 70% of the cost, or:

2. Get MBA through online or distance program at Florida, UNC, etc.

Only caveat with employer is I'm responsible for reimbursing about 50% of the cost if I leave within 2 years after completion.

If you plan on staying in Louisiana then...

Yea. I don't see myself leaving the Gulf Coast area. But I could long-term end up working for a company based elsewhere but allowing me to remain in this area. That's my basis for getting an MBA from another program.

so 70% paid for, or out of your pocket? I think the answer to that is pretty clear.

I got my MBA from a top 25 program, and while it helped me get that first job and helps with checklist, I don't think anyone really cares if you go to an elite school. Except for your first job out of MBA school

Seeing someone right now that is going through the MBA online program at UF. She absolutely loves it. And a UF MBA is pretty strong in the southeast.

Current employer will cover about 70% of tuition and fees for LSU MBA. If I leave within 2 years of completion of the program, I'll be responsible for 50% of my employer's contribution.

I think UNC and UF are regional MBAs just like LSU. UNC and UF are ranked higher in large part because Florida and the Carolinas have more opportunities for MBAs. That said, it doesn't sound like UF or UNC would open more opportunities for you than LSU would.

Still a 35% discount even if you leave.

I would go with option that would minimize out of pocket.

Unless you're going to an elite school (UNC or UF don't consider elite) getting an MBA in general will be only marginally beneficial for your career.

I've posted this before in MBA threads, but it's a degree where you need to be around your classmates. Hear their stories and experiences. It's a great networking tool and you don't get that from behind a computer screen.

UNC is a more prestigious program than UF; UNC is in the cusp of elite... Ranked around 25 in full time program which is roughly the cutoff point. Of course, it will be regionally stronger.

My sons online program requires group projects, discussions, and presentations, several of the people in his project group are in India and China. He is making many useful international contacts, and with the growing amount of business that is conducted in a digital setting today it is a excellent way to become proficient in that environment.

If your employer will only pay for LSU, I would take them up on it. You should have plenty of networking opportunities. I was fortunate enough to have an employer pay for the exec MBA at Emory from 04-06. I'm now working in a classmate's firm so it definitely worked out well for me. Good luck.

70% paid for is a sweet deal. I would not pass that up. I don't really even want an MBA but if my employer was going to pay 70% of it, I would do it.

True, but there's a difference between Linkedin connections and people you go grab drinks with after class.

Bird in the hand, but many companies that recruit MBAs offer tuition reimbursement.
