So I went to the DMV recently to register my vehicle in Louisiana and also change the title to LA as well. I was thinking it is not going to be very much maybe $200 or $300. She told me the vehicle's value was $21,500 (2010 GMC Sierra). She also said it was bad the first time and then it gets better because it was 4 year tag so I don't have to renew until 2017 and then it would be about $40. When she told me how much everything was my mouth dropped open, $1500 for a tag. I had to pay state sales tax $400 (Truck was bought in MS back in 2010, and I paid sales tax then) and then parish tax of over $1000. It also included all the tagging fees and other bullshite they include to total $1500. Does this sound correct? Everyone I tell this to says something isn't right about it.

Yep. Welcome to Louisiana. Get ready for your auto insurance increase too!

You do get a credit on the state sales tax (amount depends on state you moved from...we got the full 4% when we tranferred our cars from Arkansas) You have to pay the full parish tax though.

I would check on the following prevision

Upon moving to Louisiana new residents must register their vehicles immediately and are subject to the payment of a use tax based on the fair market value. A maximum of 4% credit may be allowed for a similar tax paid in another state against taxes due in Louisiana provided Louisiana has a reciprocal agreement with that state. Proof of payment of tax may be required.

dmv site did not list which states have a reciprocal agreement

I had this same scenario. Just moved back to LA from Texas. I bought a Seqouia in Tx last year. To transfer the title over was going to be just over $1200. They said this was some highway tax.

I also own an accord that I had prior to moving to Texas. Now of course the accord has Tx plates....but to transer this one back over to LA was going to cost $40 since it had already been registered in LA before.

I too could not believe the $1200 fee to transfer the seqouia. I decided to renew the texas registration at $40 and roll the dice until I can dig into it further. Seems effing insane to pay that. Is it tax deductible?
