I've always heard the urban legend of showing up at the airport to buy a seat on a flight that isn't sold out for super cheap. Never had the guts to try it though

I don't think it's possible anymore the way revenue management runs the systems in real-time.
But to the OP...last minute flights can be cheap. Just depends on capacity available.
