Is her cellphone a jitterbug? Otherwise, you can easily send money and transfer it to her bank within a minute. She doesn't need to be tech savvy.

While I appreciate all the alternatives, and will be sure to try to get her to subscribe to one of them, my initial point still remains. It's a customer un-friendly policy and is why I don't do business with the big banks.

Unfortunately the small banks will follow suit in due time. Capital one is following similar protocol now when it comes to who can deposit what.

Think of it this way though, you sure as hell wouldn't want someone not listed on the account to be able withdraw cash, so shouldn't the same rules apply for depositing cash into the account?

I'd gladly take your money if you want to deposit it into my account, but I don't really want you withdrawing anything.

In all seriousness, though, this is the only problem I've had with Chase. My grandmother tried to deposit a check into my account and they would not let her. She doesn't have Chase so how am I supposed to get the money other than the snail mail, and she's almost 80 years old so she ain't getting Venmo.

Those are two completely different things. If someone wants to put cash in my account, they can go right ahead, cause they ain't gonna be able to pull it back.

What's the difference between venmo and PayPal?

No fees with venmo. It's extremely simple and processes next day. I can send money to a friend and they will have it in their bank account next day. You can also use it to pay for goods and services, as well as using a credit card for purchases or transfers (subject to a 3% fee)

Really no difference now, PayPal owns Venmo and you can send no-fee payments via PayPal.

Venmo is a little more simplistic, though, with the emojis and being able to see who is paying who (but not the amount)

Chase is generally one of the first people to implement procedures but the other big banks generally follow.

I know you're probably not as amused as I am but I love a good "thread didn't go as OP intended". And this is definitely one.

FYI, I agree with you and it is a pain in the arse but, with the business you're in, you can't be surprised at how ridiculous the banks are getting.

All I read in the OP was that you attempted to use the most complicated path possible to paying her back, and it backfired on you.

You keep your checkbook at home? And that was still more inconvenient than grabbing cash and going to a different bank, going inside, and dealing with a complete stranger?

Even without technology, why not just hand your mom the cash, or mail her a check?

You made this very hard on yourself.

Banks like Chase really don't want or need personal banking customers. They are probably losing money on the normal household checking account with about 80k in payroll deposits a year.

Its actually not a bad risk based approach by Chase. They are protecting themselves from heavy fines on money laundering. Next time, just give the cash to your mom, or write the check.

Mom is retired and single. She is spending some time visiting my sister in Jackson, MS. Won't be back here until after Easter. There are no Chase branches in Jackson MS, the closest one is Monroe. So... mailing her a check wasn't an option, unless she was going to hold on to it until she got back down here, or try to take it somewhere to cash it (and pay a fee).

They did tell me I could go across the street to CVS and buy a money order and deposit that. That would seem to be an easy way around if someone was truly trying to launder money.

But they will take money orders.

If the rules are more harsh on cash than there are on money orders, then I guess that's our incompetent government at work.

I think this is it. The drive thru only being available for commercial customers shows this as well.

Plus, if I were to launder money, I'd likely do it via a commercial account, set up to look like a cash-intensive business, which I would assume they would have no issues accepting business cash deposits by anyone.

Believe or not, banks would rather hear some bitching by folks like OP, instead of being hit with millions in fines or lawsuits if just one frickup occurs if the wrong person deposits/withdrawals fraudulently.
