So we have a 3 year old that will be going to college in 2031.

I was just messing with the estimated cost calculator on the LA Start website. It is estimating that a 4 year LA public university will cost $275,000.

It assumes a 6.5% annual inflation rate.

Can this be right? If so, maybe I am a Bernie supporter after all. HAHA

$430,000 for a kid for 5 years in a LA public school born today. No way that's right.

They are probably using cost of attendance figures to do the calculation.

I'd assume somewhere around 30-35K per semester total cost of attendance.

Let's say the child goes 8 semesters (although 10 or more is becoming more common), that puts you at $240,000-$280,000.

As much as it sucks, that calculator probably isn't far off.

ETA: I originally calculated per semester, when I should have done per year. I'd say $150,000 should cover the cost of your child attending an In-State public university.

So that not factoring in lottery scholarship or anything else? Those calculators are BS as of course they want you to do more.

Yes, educational inflation rates are crazy high. The fact of the matter is most of us will pay more for high school than a regular in state college.

That's assuming no scholarships or financial aid and including living expenses and everything. I'd say it cost about $24,000 a year for a normal LSU student right now. That's not inflated.

I took a class recently through our company financial advisor and that's close to the figure he estimated when discussing future college costs at state universities. You can expect the attendance to drop if that's the case because salaries aren't rising at the same level. I'm gonna save what I can and hope for the best.
