IRA - to fee or not to fee?

So I have $300/month auto going into a Roth IRA with American Funds. I had a FA put me into it and I have not been happy with the fees. 5.75% load, yearly fee, etc. Now for the year, that was like $200 so it's not some horrible thing, but it annoys me to have less money than I put in to a retirement account that I would have if I just left it in my bank. Yes, I know now that I paid the load upfront I'm good for the long haul since they're A-Shares.
I'm thinking of lowering the auto to $225/month and then opening another Roth through my Fidelity account, putting another $225/month and see which one performs better. I'm looking at FSTMX or going with SPY. I know a lot of people on here like the Vanguard Fund VTSMX or whatever it is. Any recommendations?
The idea is to get out of American Funds for future deposits if I can do better with Fidelity/Vanguard. I really hate paying those fees
TIA

I have a similar situation. AF paying the A share. They funds have done been solid but not stellar. Opened a fidelity acct and playing with it too. I don't have a answer for you just similar. Reading here I feel like I have thrown away thousands of dollars in fees over the years. The annual maintenance fees are pretty low so maybe that helps ease some of the initial sales charge.

If you have a modicum of intelligence you can do it yourself without paying the fees. Check out bogleheads.org

Well, I feel if I'm paying that upfront then I should be getting better returns than what I have seen so far from them. shite, I could lose money on my own, I don't need them to
