Agree about the slacks and button down if interviewing with plant staff. If you are interviewing with corporate folks for a plant manager job, the story might be different.

Not at the one I work. There may be some where it is appropriate, but a suit and tie is also not inappropriate.
Much less for a management position.

Yeah I'd like to know if the OP caught grief over the suit. I can't imagine why he would but I've never worked at a plant. Some folks are making it sound like there's a blue-collar mentality all throughout.

I was going to wear my suit, but I left the jacket in my car. I didnt have the jacket on when I arrived. I had to check-in with security office. So, after I checked-in with the guards, the plant manager came to escort me to the offices. I just decided not to even worry about putting on the jacket. Fit in just fine. I think it would've worked either way, though.

OP Updated with second interview! Apparently leaving the jacket in the car wasn't a deal-breaker.
