I'm about to start sending my wife a cost report PDF to her email every month. She's actually good about not spending money but she's oblivious to how much we spend on stuff
Be careful with that. My wife knows we budget and appreciates how much we save, but a fight almost always ensues when I bring it up. She hardly spends any money. She sweats when she spends $28 at TJ Maxx or somewhere cheap. But gawd fricking forbid I send a text at the end of her dinner that says, Whew, you got out much cheaper than I expected!

good luck with that, my conversation yesterday went so poorly.
She didn't know why....
- Her hair cuts were out of her fun money but my hair conditioner is out of joint. Well she uses it. She dropped it when we were looking at purchases and her $35 face lotion popped up, again out of joint.
- She thought that visits to her parents should be filed under travel, vs. her fun money
- She couldn't believe that she spent 50% more in "fun money" in the last year vs me. I was surprised the delta was only 50%, I actually thought it would be closer to 200%.
- her final comment was this is a waste of time and effort. We spend less than we make, what is the point? And why should we track it closer. I told her we have to do it for a year before I will let us retire early.
I am going to let her cool down a bit, she was really irate over it. And then maybe bring back up on why we should track it closer. Its not about cutting spending but making better decisions. She wants to go see her parents more frequently, but she doesn't see that her $300 hair cuts make that harder. Its quite frustrating to deal with.

Yikes man, that sounds awful, and not like a winning battle at all. For some reason though, people hear the word budget and freak out like you're about to burn them alive. But it sounds to me like she's just scared to really see how much money is being pissed away by her and is getting defensive...or maybe she just really doesn't care. I'm not envious of you for the future talks to come.

I use Mint for similar personal finance resources. Is YNAB basically the same thing or does it offer advantages that Mint cannot?
I use Mint as well and I too have the same question. I spent a lot of time setting up Mint and educating my wife how to use it, but I'm always open to things that can help us better manage our finances. Is YNAB a better application than Mint?

i was flabbergasted by how irate she got over it. I wasn't even judging her personal spend, and we actually covered that last on purpose. her nose was bent from the word go.
I have no idea how we are going to tackle this, but if we want to retire at 45 we are going to have to know where every penny goes.

They do the same thing as far as budgeting. The YNAB method is meant to get you thinking ahead. You can train Mint to work exactly like YNAB but its not meant to. Does that make sense?

I'm getting married in March and I've been talking with my fiancee about putting together a combined budget for the two of us. I signed up for YNAB (found a link for 3 months free ) and I'll dive into it with my budget so I can get a feel for how it works then bring her income and expenses into it.

So far it's not much better than my spreadsheet. Maybe it will be able to sync with my bank account one day this week. :sadbanana:
ETA: I just tried to sync again and all of my accounts did.

Thank you for this thread. I signed up and went HAM on budgeting and budgeted out all of 2017. With my income I'll be able to fully fund an emergency fund (4 months liquid), fully fund my share of the wedding I'm going through in December and will have a few K left over as long as I stay within my budget (which includes close to 8k in discretionary spending).
Gonna be real useful when I have my wedding behind me and emergency fund set up so I can focus on lowering my student loan debt, saving for house down payment and car down payment. I want to get serious about my finances going forward and I feel YNAB will be a big help.

YNAB would be excellent if it were free. As a pay for service, it is average at best. For people who had no budget at all prior, I'm sure they find it useful. My free spreadsheet did all of this, I just had to do it manually. I just need to get my spreadsheet onto dropbox or iCloud Drive so I can use it on the go more rather than reconciling it every Monday at work.
And yes $50/year is pennies a day, but not for a service that can't seem to even sync my accounts when I ask it to.

YNAB sync absolutely blows. Cancelling because if that
I can do the YNAB process in excel just as well for free

only issues I've had with YNAB sync is recently with Capital One. I just changed the login page setting when selecting the bank and that fixed it right away.
The thing with their sync (I spoke to an actual dev about it one day when I was having issues) is that they seem to only sync twice a day. I was complaining because nothing was showing up to be sync'd when I knew that items had cleared. Apparently me checking everything at 8-9am was too early for it and the guy basically told me to be patient. Either way, I only use the sync option for confirming my manual entries. I don't use it to actually import charges, but too each their own.

Yea the sync function is not what it should be, but I'm now just manually importing everything and using sync to check my work. Sure it's a little annoying, but not a deal breaker for me.

They have now had an issue with USAA and just straight up won't sync despite correct credentials.

I'm having the same issue, but haven't cracked the code yet. What exactly did you do? (I'm legacy Hibernia and not Capital One 360 - I've tried every option I could find.)

I was using the "capital one formerly household" or something like that and instead chose the one for "capital one current statements" the "formerly ..." version kept giving me errors saying a message had been sent to the dev team blah blah blah. So I just got sick of it and tried a different capital one and it worked first time.

Took a couple of tries, but that fixed my credit card. Still working on the checking. Thanks for the tip.
