Identity Theft Protection

What's the Money Board's opinion on Identity Theft Protection programs? Is this a must that I'm being beyond irresponsible for not having? I buy almost everything online, and I'm always nervous about someone stealing my identity.
Are these programs just hassle management, though? If someone steals my credit is there stuff I can't repair that I would have needed this people for ahead of time or are they just assisting with the hassle of me calling everyone and getting everything remedied?
If they're just reducing my headache then I don't know if it's worth it. If they actively stop the theft or remedy it better then it seems like I should have it.
Also, any good recommendations on which to us? TIA!

I use Zander. It's $12 a month and supposedly they handle everything. I've never had to use it but it does give me peace of mind.

Yes. They're scams. They do everything that you can do for free.

I'm currently paying $10-15 per month to Discover for this. Interested in the board opinion on this as well.
