How to get rid of someone that could damage your business.

Have a guy working for me in marketing. He markets alright, but its all pretty self serving and I am seeing little return in the bottom line.

He has turned into a politically ambitious person and has all my contacts. I have been in business 30 years so he couldn't do detrimental damage, but he does seem like he would be the type to bad mouth, sabotage etc. my business, because frankly he doesn't like many there.

What are my options to minimize the damage if I let him go? I could have him sign an agreement of confidentiality and non solicitation. But would that really help?

You could always try and help him find a better job elsewhere

Good answer. Hopefully in the same industry., a bigger company that could certainly take business from me.

Have you thought about punching him in his face?

you'd have to offer him severance compensation in return. The best thing to do is just cut him loose and move on. I've known many sales types through the years who thought they could take their customer base with them, but if the company does a good job with it's clients, few actually do.

The key is, however, if you are really worried, don't let him linger. Have his personal stuff packed up, secure everything that is business related (computer, business cards, quote files, etc.), and see him to the door.

Yeah. Sales people are a constant headache. I have personally gone back into it and am overseeing it again. For some reason, they think any business they bring you.. they are entitled to more then they are actually getting (salary+commission).

This individual, I have made sure that I am involved with the contacts that are very important and could be detrimental to my business (Exxon, mapp, legislature etc). I am prominent with all the foundations, companies and organizations, and have to stay that way for that very reason. Basically, I never get a break and that's just part of owning/running a business.

And plus, I ain't stupid. I have a file hidden nice and cozy in my safe with some not so scrupulous behavior on it. Not that I would ever do that.

Had a talk with him today and put his feet to the fire and get his head out his arse or leave. The contacts and intellectual property are mine. He can go frick himself. Or as you say, shown the door.

He's back in line. For now.

frick business can be unworldly stressful. But very rewarding and satisfying.

It's like and then like

Well it sounds like you handled your situation tactfully.

BTW, he's gone for sure now.....
