First off, nobody pays the appraised price. Those values are always HIGHLY inflated.

Again, so does everybody. Your appraisal still means NOTHING.
No shite the appraisal means nothing. The entire industry is laughable. I merelely offered a suggestion to the OP for a cheaper option to buy a near worthless piece of carbon vs retail.

By that logic you are getting fricked and paying double on almost every purchase you make in your life.
Go buy a major appliance or other large purchase. You will be able to resell it the day after you bought it for close to what you paid online via eBay, Amazon, Craigslist etc. A ring? Won't get shite the day after. So yea - you are getting fricked.

Carry on though, thinking you're the smartest guy in the room.
Never claimed to be. The fact that I bought a ring and got engaged should be evidence of that lol. Go drink a beer and relax dude

yeah, but what if people really do like that kind of stuff. And yes, some people to have big extended families and a bunch of friends that they want to be there with on that special day.

Then spend your $50k+ on your wedding and enjoy yourself. There are more people who go that route than the alternative.

I would go the opposite of what most here recommended, and I'd buy a 1.24 or 1.45 diamond in a lower grade. The advice about buying just under the 1 carat, 1.25 carat or 1.5 carat mark is spot on for saving money. All diamonds look great by themselves when they are clean, its not until you have 2 next to each other that you can tell the difference between a great one and not so great.
The only thing women say is "wow look at how big it is" you never hear " wow look at how clear that small diamond is".
So what I tell my friends to do is buy the size diamond you are thinking of in a lower quality and buy a really nice ring. Then at the 5 year, 10, 25 whatever anniversary you have a great gift to give your wife to upgrade diamond quality.

This is false if you have a diamond that sparkles more than most.

Oh yea, spend more later. Great idea. And such a great gift. Giving her the nice diamond when it's no longer a big deal to her or anyone she talks to. Everyone wants to see the ring when you're engaged, not decades down the road.

I messed up. Did the whole three month salary on it and now the ring is tuck away in a safe at home and she wears a band she paid 100 bucks for. She says I don't want to worry about damaging it so I could of really saved thousands

Worried about damaging a diamond?

my wife says the same thing
but not damaging, she is worried about the diamonds falling out or something

That's part of the reason I wear just a band w/small, bezel-set stones. It's not flash enough to cause me to worry when I travel or ride public transit. It easily survives contact with bread dough, screenprinting inks, oil paint, mud & compost, sawdust, fish guts, power tools: few gemstones of any size in non-bezel settings can stand up to heavy use. Jewelry that is meant to be worn every day should match the wearer's lifestyle...or it will end up in a box, not on a finger.

my wife does the same. She pulled a prong(?) off and since then I haven't seen her wear it. The difference is my ring was like $800.

I kinda do the same thing, as I wear a $50 titanium wedding band instead of the more expensive tungsten band my wife bought me

i am on my 6 wedding ring. trust me guys, don't lose 1 let alone 5.

If you make an investment on a diamond, buy jewelery insurance, or add it to your homeowner's. Also, most local stores will cover small inset diamond that fall out. I bought my wife a .9 main stone; but the ring is 2.4 TW; Ramsey's in Metairie will replace all diamonds except for the .9, so I pay about $65 a year on insurance (which covers total replacement, loss, damage or theft) on the big stone.

Get insurance for it. Covers everything and is not expensive. That way she can wear it and niether of you have to worry.
You should probably get it anyway I case of a burglary.

"Sparkle" is more in the cut than the color.
I, like I'm sure most money conscious people here, did a lot of research and spent about 4 months shopping. Going past h is getting murky in color, but you can find a stone that was graded too strictly and get a deal. EGL is really bad at color grading though. They'll sell you a black diamond and call it a d. I seriously doubt you can tell a huge difference on anything h or better in GIA. Like you'd have to get two girls to put rings side by side on a white piece of paper. It's never going to happen.
Now with a 2 carat plus, it may be easier to see. Bet when you're spending that cash, you shouldn't pull any punches.

haven't read the entire thread but I recently got engaged/married.
I spent 7000 on a Tiffany's ring in December. I thought it was steep but my expectations of costs was poor and don't regret spending that much at all.
